Some kids are fine and belong in this path. Most do not. Obviously my kids friends is a small sample size. Our MS accelerated over half the kids on this path.

What's the difference between geometry and honors geometry?

I learned that Wheaton HS is switching to offering Alg 1 followed by Alg 2, and then geometry. You could ask the HS counselor at the school your daughter will be attending what they recommend.

You can take Algebra II and Geometry at the same time. Does she want to take something beyond Calc BC? If so, not all schools offer the higher math.

Can we please get the entire district to progress to this. Even better eliminate geometry as a separate course altogether and make Algebra a three year course sequence where Geometry and Trigonometry are purposefully integrated.

If she did these both the same year, which is entirely possible, she could do precalc in 10th, and then either BC in 11th and multivariate in 12th (for a very strong math student) or AB in 11th and BC in 12th for a student who needs a little more time to master calculus.

I think this is a great idea, but I don't know if it would work with the state requirements to take a separate algebra and geometry class (with state tests at the end - at least for algebra). Are there counties in the state that do this?

The requirement is:

4 credits,1 including instruction in algebra aligned with the MCA for algebra or 1 or more credits in subsequent mathematics courses for which Algebra 1 is a prerequisite, and 1 with the content standards for geometry.


The content standards for geometry would be met in this scenario. They could work with the state to determine the best point in the sequence to take the Alg1 MCAP.

Are you sure?
None of the 3 classes alone is aligned with content standards with Geometry.
The policy might need a change to something like a Geometry summative PARCC/MCAP, and a class that "makes substantial use of geometry", like the Algebra policy.
