The PD video teachers must watch on Monday

Anonymous
I got to the part where they want teachers to organize a city transportation rehaul if a child can't get to school on time...

What are we doing to retain the teachers we still have?

Yes. We were told to bring a charged device and headphones on Monday morning.

I am dreading showing this to staff on Monday. We've had several staff hit by students this school year and the lack of accountability in terms of student behavior is out of control. If there is any advice I can give MCPS parents is that if you have children who are coming home commenting about behaviors at their school, believe your kids. Email the teacher, the principal, etc. I'm in a Title 1 school so we have smaller class sizes in K - 2nd grade. We have a first grade class with sixteen students but requires multiple adults to keep it somewhat under control. The teacher was punched two weeks ago in the face and the area director wouldn't allow the principal to suspend the student. The teacher, however, was supposed to just ignore the bruise on her face and come back the next day and continue on like nothing is wrong.

THIS IS NOT OKAY! Things in MCPS are terrible right now. We may get paid well (for educators) but the conditions are atrocious. This video we have to watch is insulting. The central office staff who have designed this PD and script need to be in schools more often to see what it looks like these days. Schools look so much different now than 2018.

That’s a pretty funny video. Cliffs: the current justice system is not good. Also of note is no mention of parents.

These principals better not be upset about staff being out sick later that week then. Teachers are vectors of covid, flu, strep, stomach flu, and a few other things right now and generally are not all in the same room for hours. There is no reason for staff to have to sit in the same room to watch a video on their own devices.

Just another move by central office to alienate teachers and exert their will.

This is our agenda for Monday, sent to us by our principal:

Districtwide Professional Learning Day – Monday, October 9th

Morning Session – 9:00 a.m.

By the end of our morning session, we will have:

*Built community that recognizes the impact of race, ethnicity, and culture.
*Deepened our knowledge of the levels of racism and the characteristics of White Supremacy Culture.
*Heard an overview of the Equitable Teaching and Learning Framework with a focus on Core Component #2 – School and Classroom Environment.
*Reflected on the lessons that “troublemakers” teach us about our school and classroom environments.
*Explored examples of how our colleagues have reflected on and made shifts to their school and classroom environments to make them more culturally responsive and/or anti-racist.

LUNCH – 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Afternoon Session – 1:30 p.m.

By the end of our afternoon session, we will have:

*Explored and reflected on components of GLEAM
*Collaborated with peers to plan for instruction built on a foundation of GLEAM

As a teacher who has SO MUCH ACTUAL WORK TO DO and who happens to be married to a black man and have biracial kids, this is such a crock of shit. It's just MCPS checking the box to brag about how culturally responsive they are. But honesty from the Board about real problems w/in our own system is what is needed. HOW MUCH MONEY DID MCPS SPEND ON THIS BS TRAINING!

I can't wait to see what news outlets think of this teacher "training"

What can parents do to make out dissatisfaction with the current regime known? Write to the board of Ed?

What is GLEAM?

I watched a little of I b I t o f. It NFW and t very impressed but the whole concept seems more focused on ES students, not HS. A five year old distrusting a classroom is totally different then. 15 year old:
I feel like a better way to teach this topic would be for each schoo to identify one or two experienced teachers who are well respected in the school to lead a mentoring conversation about what has worked for them as far as classroom management. Each school clounitty is homing to have different challenges, I’m sure:

My HS kid recently brought home a study sheet that she said all teachers have been instructed to use — she is in advanced. Lands and it looks like.a sheet designed fair 3rd graders. Most of her teachers said they they won’t use it but the one new guy is using it and it’s a huge waste of time for the kids.

Yo please call someone immediately, in your home or a neighbor. Something's not right.

I’m a parent and not a teacher, but if I were a teacher I would feel insulted and disrespected that this is what my school district is trying to pass off as professional development. This is abysmal.

Monifa has no shame.

Please share your definition of the word "communist".

You must have been stuck with a troublemaker disrupting your English and History classes.

Anyone know how much funding went into this woman and this program?
