OP again! This nailed it. I’m not reading these for plot or personal growth 😂 |
NP. But if it's so poorly written that there is no good dialogue and the scenes are just cringey, then the existence of the smut doesn't matter because you're distracted from it. I have a high tolerance for poor writing as far as smut goes but there is a lot that is just too bad to enjoy. |
Yeah. I have a low tolerance for poor writing for sure. It is very distracting for me so smut doesn't work. |
Great thread OP! I’m looking books like the old short stories from Penthouse forum. You folks might be too young to remember those magazines. They use to sell them in the airport! Super smutty. |
I don’t think I could do it either. I wish! I used to love Jackie Collins when I was younger. |
Yup, this is my problem too. |
Not really. The famous writers do a great job with plotting. Check out Lorette Chase, Lisa Kleypas, Lorraine Heath. |
One of the best historical series I've read that does a great job of mixing good writing with the romance (open door and plenty of it) and humor is Jennifer Ashley's MacKenzies & McBrides series.
It follows four brothers and their in-laws. One of the brothers, the main character of the first book, is neurodivergent and he is delightful. The first book remains outrageously popular. |
PP here and I will say that my tolerance for poor writing went way up after getting into smut. I went from reading challenging non-fiction to fluffy but good romance authors like Emily Henry to books with titles like "Bound by Honor (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles Book 1)." Helen Hoang, specifically, was a gateway drug. But there really is a lot of perfectly decent smut out there, if you look. |
Right there with ya, OP. I'm into historical romance.
Some good ones: Lisa Kleypas Sarah MacLean K.J. Jackson There are levels to the smut and bad writing. I cannot tolerate really ,really bad writing, but it doesn't have to be pulitzer level, either. It's my escape. |
Kennedy Ryan is a great author of "Romance in Real Life" themed books.
If you still need substance - read "Before I Let Go" - it's a marital/family drama. Parts are devastatingly sad, other parts are super sexy. If you need more smut, and less tragedy stick with the Grip series. |
I like really smutty dirty mouthed books so keep that in mind when I suggest you check out
J A Huss (Something for everybody) Simone Sienna https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7369992.Sierra_Simone Try the American Queen series. Cecelia Aaron (all the trigger warnings) |
The sub-category "Romantic Suspense" often have pretty good interesting twisty plots. |
I am not talking about plotting. I am talking about the writing. |
Seems like your mind is made up and this isn't the thread for you. Enjoy your books! |
