How long to wait for doctor before leaving?

I really wish this was possible.

Many patients lose money when they go for a medical visit. Or get parking tickets because the doctor ran late, etc.

It is not right that only their time is perceived as having value.

I know sometimes they are late beyond their control, but they do not build this into their scheduling at all because they don't want to lose a DIME for downtime.

I am usually this mentality. But dentists don't typically run late. They don't have the same variability of most healthcare providers. If they find a cavity, you have to schedule another appointment to come back. So I'd probably inquire at the front desk after 20 minutes and then wait 30-45 depending on what I have. Yeah, you can walk out but it usually takes longer to make a new appointment and come back.

LOL you know why dentists run on time? Because their patients can't talk!!!

please report back when you find a medical office willing to pay you for not seeing you

If you want to be a dick about it, you take them to small claims court based on their policy. Ours charges a $50 fee for missed appointments and specifies that more than 15 minutes triggers the fee. There is no language clarifying that it only applies to late patients and the office drafted the policy.

Have you or someone you love ever been fit in at the last minute "for an emergency" or brought up "just one more thing, while I'm here?"

I waited more than an hr once in a room with a paper gown on. I was seething mad. Ready to leave and did not. Glad I did not cause when they got to me they were most attentive and not rushed.

I once walked out of the exam room after waiting 45 mins to see the doctor. I got dressed, told the front desk it was unacceptable to leave me waiting in the exam room for 45 mins in a gown. They sent me a bill for $100 for the exam- even though there was no medical exam. I posted about my experience on Yelp which was my only leverage. I had a feeling I would hear from their office regarding my negative (but factual) review. They asked me to take it down, I told them I would only take it down if they voided my $100 bogus medical bill. In retrospect I should have kept my review up and gone after him via the insurance company but I just wanted to be done with it.

A dentist, 15 min unless they told me right when I walked in "the dentist is running behind due to an emergency."

I never wait when i have to go in for a cleaning.

Other doctors, like others said if it's a specialist I waited a long time for an appointment for I would wait longer than for a check-up.

15 mins? That's unreasonable.

How come One Medical is never late for their appointments? Yes they charge me $200 a year but that's not a LOT of money. How can they afford to see their patients on time but no one else can?

My dentist gives me 15 mins grace so I give them 15 mins grace. When I have complained about the wait time, the nurse comes out and takes height:weight and sticks me in room for another 20 mins *ughh*

For a specialist who is hard to get in to see we have waited as long as several hours, but I did get on waitlist to see someone else. For our amazing pediatrician I have waited an hour. For a dentist I would not wait more than 30 minutes because it’s easy to find someone else. For a doctor who doesn’t take insurance no more than 20 minutes.

10min. Unless it’s an obgyn or the desk has upfront said the doctor got called into an emergency and do I want to reschedule.

My time is not any less valuable than the medical professional’s. They knowingly overbook appointments and presume patients can simply sit. I’m usually a jerk about it, and let both the desk and the doctor know it’s rude.

All that would matter to me is what time I need to leave and if I still had time.

If they’re more than 15 minutes late I’d want an estimated new time for planning.

I have my phone, if I’m not due somewhere immediately I don’t mind waiting. I can always get stuff done or be entertained on my phone.

I’m surprised by how many of you seem to see this as a justice/affront thing and not just a logistics hurdle. Who cares why they’re late? I’ll probably never know anyway. All that matters is if you can rearrange to make it work and if you need to plan differently next time.
