Snow on the beach is, 100% |
What makes you think that? It was released November 22… She was still with Joe at the time. |
They hadn’t yet announced their breakup but that doesn’t mean they were actually still together. Midnights is a breakup album. |
What makes you think the song is about Matty? |
The lyrics are clearly about a new relationship (makes sense with the timing), and also seem to strongly point to him (the two of them together is like snow on the beach). |
| This is true. Midnights shows a shift from Joe to someone else. It just wasn't made public for a while and officially Taylor was also taking time. There are songs from her about Matty starting with Folklore in fact. |
You think she’s been with Matty for 3 years? I agree Midnights is a breakup album BUT She wrote Folklore when she was in lockdown with Joe. She’s stated that publicly. |
DP but and Matty had a previous romance so I’m sure there are earlier songs referencing him. |
|
I just can’t with the “midnights is a breakup album” =her and joe were done.
During the announcement of Midnights she told us exactly what it was, a series of stories from over her life. This makes perfect sense as she was also, presumably, in the middle of re-recording Debut-reputation. So already in a reflective space. Some of those stories are about past relationships ( Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, Midnight Rain, Question…). We all know that a long term relationship doesn’t end overnight. While she was reflecting and writing she was likely also processing the breakdown of relationship she was in. Was it Springsteen who said he didn’t realize an album was about the falling apart of his marriage until it was over? I think this is a similar situation. The 2 exceptions to that are 2 tracks that were not part of the original drop, Hits Different (target only but probably produced later than the original tracks) and You’re Losing Me. Maroon is about JG (Red era, maroon, nyc) Question…? is Harry styles (out of the woods sampling, times square midnight kiss) Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve is John Mayer (definitely the worst ex) The Great War is likely Joe, but notably they survive the war so it was a previous fight. Sorry, I’ve gone on a whole thing about this but the retconning fans do on this drives me nuts. |
no, no it’s not. please let’s give her more credit for being able to write about FICTIONAL characters. Not everything has to be autobiographical. |
Briefly in 2014. Not when she was writing folklore in the middle of the pandemic when she was Holed-away in the countryside with Joe. |

there's a whole lot more going on here. first off, she and healy were at the same NME award show in 2020 when he talked about artists as cowboys. he later said "Taylor Swift should do an acoustic album." what does she do a few months later? put out folklore, which starts with the 1, about an unrequited love and spelled like the 1975 (numbers, not letters).
"I have this dream you're doing cool shit Having adventures on your own You meet some woman on the internet and take her home"-- Matty's last album was called a Brief Inquiry Into Online Relation ships. Another lyric "if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow" Matty's song Robbers from his first album contains this lyric: "if you never eat you, you'll never grow"-- the song is about an unrequited love from her 20s. This is one instance in a number that points to her mind drifting back to that relationship they had (was not publicized). There is a pattern of this through Midnights. Joe was starting to bore her. |

The sample on question was to throw people off.
Harry styles does not do "politics/gender roles," does not have half moon eyes. There is a story of matty and Taylor kissing in a room as referred to in the song from 2014. The fact they were dating then was denied by both in public, but they had a month of seeing each other and some off and off after that until she met Calvin, who is the "dickhead guy" she met while at a BBC party that Matty was at that night, referred to in the song Question. |
| Good girl....sad boy. Harry has never been 'sad boy.' lol That's Matty. "you were on something" -- matty was starting to struggle with a drug problem. That song Question was never about Harry. I was wondering about it from the start and it all made sense this past May |
|
For sure Question is about Matty Healy, and there are a handful of other songs that may be as well (even just bejeweled, the Band-- what the 1975 call themselves, have on their merch and in some videos printed)-- but Question is so funny to me bc it talks about that "meteor strike, everything else being second best."
So, Joe Alwyn, did you hear this? Did you not hear it-- were you listening? Odd thing for your girlfriend to be singing while in a relationship with you. There are also interviews where Matty talks about having worked on Midnights. A song that did not make the final cut is interesting, maybe it was a sort point with Joe so it was held. |
