It's actually "Polytechnic" which includes any applied sciences and businesses. |

If the goal is legitimatley medical school [as opposed to pre med for one semester and then you know your kid, they'll drop out], it pays to be strategic.
Even if cost is no object, it pays NOT to go to ultra competitive schools that grade on a curve; places like Hopkins aren't great places to go for pre med bc EVERYONE is pre med and so strongly competitive, that ultimately the top med schools can't just fill their whole med school classes with just Hopkins undergrads. I know more than one person who has gone to Hopkins or Cornell undergrad (grade deflationary) and been disappointed to end up at a state school for med school - bc they were people who wanted the resume pedigree of Hopkins undergrad to Penn Med or whatever. On the flip side I know more than one person who went pre med at Wisconsin or Virginia Tech, was a bigger fish in a smaller pond, and landed at med school at Penn or Mayo or Columbia. I know some will say med school is med school it doesn't matter, but it does. Your ticket is written if you go to a top med school - in large part because they are pass/fail, so you are just there to learn and aren't then competiting to be in the top % of your class to get a good residency. You want to go to as highly ranked of a med school as you can get into. |

Right, but some people think it’s literally just a STEM school. There’s a lot more to it than that. DP |

Just like everywhere, hard workers do fine in med school apps. I know one admitted this spring to 6 med/DO programs; they worked for it though.
It’s not a place where students get their hands held. However, professors are responsive, and study groups are prevalent. Requires some independence as a student. Many students continue to medical school, dental school, vet school and physician assistant programs. |
+1 Not sure people realize how much work is required for pre-med to truly make the grades to be competitive for med schools. Professors will not hold hands or make exceptions. |
| They have a vet school too. |
| My stepson graduated from VT with a degree in Neuroscience (their School of Neuroscience is spectacular) and will be starting med school at Georgetown this fall. It’s a great program. |
