Have you hired a contractor based on Yelp or houzz reviews? How did it go?

Don’t do it. I hired a contractor based on reviews and absolutely regret it. 4.5 stars on Houzz, Yelp, Angi, and Google. They were awful. When things started to go wrong, I went back and looked at the reviews again. I noticed the second time around that many of them were posted by people with only one review (fake accounts or friends), most didn’t have any photos, many said the same types of things, etc. In retrospect, most of them were fake. And in the 6 months between when we hired them and when they started the job, a whole bunch of 1 and 2 star reviews popped up that were clearly from disgruntled customers like myself.
