Okay so maybe the wrong place to ask this but my kid scored in the 98th percentile and is category 9A but he really struggles with reading. I know cogat is about how a kid thinks not how they read but do you think it could suggest a learning or reading disorder? Or at least something going on?
We did an assessment and are waiting in results but just curious if anyone else has experienced this because I am impatient. Not sure if I should go ask on the special needs forum instead. |
That’s a good question. I would start a thread in the special needs forum. I hope you get some good answers! |
Was your kid taught to read using phonics/science of reading? Check out podcast Sold a Story |
This yr is phonics. Last yr I think was still the old method that APS used but he did have phonics books last yr too. He has had a tutor for 3 years doing phonics. Last yr he was writing stories in writers workshop, but they don't do that this yr and he has refused all work. I think something bigger is going on, just a struggle to figure it out. |
I'm not sure what to make of these scores. Kid is in 99th percentile in the quantitative, slightly less in verbal, but 20 points less in nonverbal. This nonverbal score is a lot lower than their NNAT score from 1st grade. I am not even sure of what it's measuring?
Also, my kid took this test as a makeup, bc of illness during the actual test time, so they took it compressed into 2 days (one section on one day, 2 seconds another day) when the other kids took it over 3 days (one section each day). I feel like that was a disadvantage. Maybe the nonverbal portion came at the end of that doubled-up day. Anyway, it's an interesting data point, but does it make any tangible difference in their educational path in APS? |
Does anyone know how APS uses these scores to identify gifted kids? Is it that the total score needs to be above a certain level? |
PP - my kiddo is very similar. 9e, which means a huge difference between two scales (98-99%ile) and one (70th). We suspect dyslexia. Wishing you luck as you figure this out - these super bright 2e kiddos are so tricky. |
Yes, they use the scores for that. Not sure of the cut off. |
My kid, recently diagnosed with dyslexia, scored very high on the cogat as well. Your kid might be 2E (twice exceptional— gifted with a learning disability). |
Yes, these are big red flags, I would talk to you child's teacher about am evaluation (or get one privately) Having three years of tutoring and still struggling is not right |
Yeah, it has just been so weird because the first year was virtual kinder so it was kind of a mess. Then last year things were still a mess but this is the first year we have really had a regular school and he still struggles. We did get a private evaluation just waiting on the results and just lots of anxiety until I get answers (hopefully soon). Sometimes I think he just doesn't want to do it and then I don't know what to do with that. Like he will struggle to read words at home with me but then points out large adn complex words when we are in the stores. It is like a book is too much for him but individual words are fine? Not sure what that is a sign of. |
So when would you expect some sort of communication from your kid's school about gifted identification? Does it happen rolling through the year, or is there a "season" for it? If our child is in 2nd grade, should we expect some sort of enrichment work provided now or not until 3rd grade? |
You should learn who the gifted coordinator is at your school and email them, I think. I bet it’s different at every school, but I think that at ours, yes, identification happened in second and gifted classes did start in third. DS went though several teachers who were new and didn’t know about the gifted program, and I had to do a parent referral or request or something for him. |
Referrals are due by April 1, you will find out yes or no by the end of the year. https://www.apsva.us/gifted-services/eligibility/ Last year I got an email my kid was referred in early Feb from the school and found out the result very late May. The services started this year, though they aren't really particularly recognizable as advanced services. The most valuable part for my kid (2nd grade) is being clustered with other high ability kids. The challenge each other in math games, recommend books to each other, etc. |
Pulling up this thread bc I searched “cogat” and “APS”. Has anyone had a kid with 9th stanine scores that did NOT get identified? We are getting weird vibes from the school. Thanks. |
