MCPS closed for Diwali?

No school for students and minimal to no work for teachers.

And yet… like every other dim witted “school is closed?!” thread.. the students have 180 days of school. The world continues to spin. So ridiculous.

I wouldn’t describe what teachers need to do today as minimal. Many of us have had to do coverage during our planning periods for weeks and see no end to that in sight. Not holding classes today is a godsend if you need to plan for MP2, which starts in a couple weeks.

It’s just like winter break coincidentally happens at Christmas. Exactly the same thing.

You worry about you. Only look in someone else’s bowl to be sure they have enough.

It’s probably school by school workload. and I shouldn’t generalize, I just know two of my friends who are teachers, and work at different elementary schools, are off having fun today (I’m slightly jealous).

How much is enough? If they can arrange the schedule to make this easier on people I think it's worthwhile.

I wonder what percentage of posters are angry that students who are South Asian have today free to observe their holiday vs. posters who are angry that they think teachers are just playing Wordle all day today because surely they can’t actually have tasks they need to complete.

MCPS teachers work on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Maybe you had those as a paid holiday and did something fun then.

It's not a coincidence. It was a planned move by MCPS after several months, or years, of testifying at BOE meetings regarding the importance of the day.

Thy also don't close for the Jewish holidays anymore, the amazing timing of the professional days.

It's a joke. They are afraid they will offend anyone and everyone.

They just renamed the holidays to professional days.

The requirement for staff varies WIDELY by school. Today my school has full school mandatory workshops for 7 hours. We'd rather be grading or planning.

Which just leaves people pissed off about lazy teachers and childcare rather than realizing the reason and saying "happy holidays."

Not sure what Jewish holidays you're referring to, but RH and YK are both "No school for students and teachers". Diwali, Eid, and Lunar New Year are professional days.
