Back in the day, this was entertaining and funny.
And eye candy. Good looking cast. . And people oddly identified themselves in the characters or otherwise found them a bit relatable. Like a group of "friends" would be. Sorta like I Love Lucy was huge for our parents' generation, but now that type of sitcom falls flat . |
Nobody on that show was attractive save aniston and only in a very generic way. |
IMO, Courtney Cox was always far prettier than Jennifer Aniston. |
I’m with you OP! I watched pretty much every episode as they aired, thanks to my roommates, but never got the humor. I enjoyed the more serious plot lines - Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, but the comedy just seemed sooo stupid.
I loved Seinfeld though. |
She looked like she got caught in a pencil sharpener. |
Wow, the comic timing and chemistry of the actors was awesome. Friends was a great show! There were so many laugh out our moments — Ross with the leather pants? Gets me every time, it’s clean, unpretentious funny. Everything is so contrived now. |
I didn't watch it when it was on, but many, many years later, I binged it the month our first child was born. It was a really hard time and that show was light and silly and just what I needed. |
Why was any show popular?
It was escapist! A nation was gripped wondering Who Shot JR? More people watched the ending of MASH than any other television series in history? Bonanza? Marcus Welty, MD? Three’s Company? Those programs and Friends appealed to a lot of people and the advertisers who were courting them and made the networks a load of money! Now excuse me, I am off to the Regal Beagle! |
I still love it despite recent criticism that it “doesn’t hold up.” And as an adult I have a newfound respect for David Schwimmer’s acting. Of course Ross is the annoying one a lot of viewers don’t like. But the way he delivers lines and his physical comedy…he’s damn funny! He did a great job being annoying. |
Oops. Your dumb is showing. |
I’m so sorry you never learned to be an adult and let people enjoy things. |
The show was consistently funny for many years. The only character who wasn't particularly funny was Phoebe. The rest were funny in the following order: Chandler, Rachel, Ross (awesome physical humor), Monica/Joey (tie). The show has held up...my high schooler loves the show and has watched it more than once. There were many great guest stars (Tate Donovan, Bruce Willis, Tom Selleck, Christina Applegate, Jon Favreau, Giovanna Ribisi, etc.). The show was also sweet. Haters need to just accept that it was an excellent sitcom...an artform that has been lost today for whatever reason... |
Nobody is stopping you! But do note this is a forum for opinions! |
It was the Panera of sitcoms |
My teen likes it - watches the reruns with me. I tend to turn it on as background noise during the day. The Brad Pitt episode was on TBS the other day and I laugh every time-he was so good and the cast interacting with him was hysterical.
I do think it got a bit too much in later seasons and they became pretty one dimensional, but I still watched. And I am a “fan” who hated the whole Emma storyline (forced plot device) and really didn’t think Ross and Rachel belonged together in the end (go to Paris, sheesh) But overall, a show that has can always turn on and enjoy something about it |
