Elementary schools in fcps to avoid and why

Forest Edge. Student population sucks!

French immersion a draw for many families but this program is
lackluster and poorly managed. Parents use the immersion program as ticket out of their in boundary elementary schools and so their student will be in immersion one year then drop and get to stay.

Weird, our LI program tells parents that kids who drop out have to return to their base school.

& can't keep a principal.

Another cynical tear down FCPS and public education poster. Must be OP’s night to start a thread filled with vitriol.

I suspect because the parents are who essentially picks the principal. They inevitably pick one they know they manipulate who burns out quick.

Neighborhood is great at least though!

I find most elementary schools are fairly decent. I wouldn’t choose where you live or where to go based on posts from here.

Most of Haycock’s principals have had longer than average tenures. The exceptions were one principal who was a disaster and another who was removed due to something that happened at his prior school (Freedom Hill) and had nothing to do with Haycock. The current principal is strong and generally well regarded.

Haycock/Longfellow/McLean remains one of the most sought-after pyramids in FCPS so no surprise the usual haters have materialized.

It's not hating to observe that Haycock parents fired a principal (!).

It'll be a long time before they live that down.

Yeah, no. A principal is picked by FCPS administration at the regional level. Sometimes parents and School Board members have some limited input.

Principal J was drummed out mostly due to his proposed changes to AAP.

I don’t think he’s even in education anymore.

Not really. The guy in question had equally short tenures at his next two jobs, one of which was at a high-poverty school in another state. Now he’s a real estate agent in Las Vegas.

I agree about Olde Creek. I wanted to love it because it was small, neighborhood school but after two kids had bad experiences in 3 years we moved right before pandemic. Bigger elementary was so much better. Sad to hear it has not improved.

Love when Haycock parents come on here and are like "they're being mean because they're jealous!". It literally happens in every thread your school is mentioned.

Lots of schools get hated on, PP, and many of them are not in your precious sought-after pyramid. We purposely stayed out of that area because we (a) preferred a school with more diversity and (b) could get more house for our money on the other side of Broad St./Leesburg Pike.

And yes, we know your precious Haycock is diverse, but wealthy Asian kids aren't the only ones added diversity to schools.

(Sidebar: My kids ARE wealthy Asian kids)

. . .

He wanted to water it down, with (I strongly suspect) an eventual goal of eliminating it.
