Update - after flicking through Netflix, slight chance this is Anxious People, which was a 2020 book by Frederick Bachman and is now a movie on Netflix.

It fits in that it was mentioned on DCUM last week in a thread (in which I participated), and there is a crime, and I have read it.

Does not fit in that it's not a thriller the way I was thinking.

But I think I am going to convince myself it was Anxious People and move on with my too long to be read/to be watched lists.

It could be Wolf Like Me

Amazon's Hannah series was based on a movie, not a book. But a female lead.

I was just going to suggest this! I posted about it several weeks ago on a thread about Scandinavian TV shows.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA!

OP here - I finally got it! The Girl Before. Coming to HBO Max on Feb 10. Book by J.P Delaney, published 2017. I put it on my to read list in 2018, so still fits in my "a fairly recent" book. Also not one of the flashy, high profile books that have been mentioned, and not crazy high profile actors (but still pretty good cast - Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo, so some acting chops).

It's a 4 part BBC mini series.

I was scrolling through instagram and an ad popped up along with a flash of recognition.

I came close to typing that maybe it was a British thriller (the book), as I have a weakness for them, but I just wasn't sure, and I thought the movie was American, but I'm pleased to see it's British, too.

The author wrote two of the episodes and was an exec producer. This could be good - I think I might just watch the series, and not try to read the book first.
