OP here- my DC applied to Pitt(accepted with 40k merit), UMBC (accepted with 36k merit), Fordham (accepted), case western, VA tech and UMD. My DC did not want a very competitive school environment. But I feel maybe should have pushed him to aim slightly higher

Virginia Tech early action doesn't come out until mid January.

DC with an ACT of 33 (generally considered to be in the 1460-1490 SAT range) and 3.9UW/4.5W rejected ED from SLAC (think "elite" but not "uber elite" SLAC).
Ouch!

My kid got accepted ED at a school that I'd describe in similar terms with a 31 ACT, 3.8UW/4.5W. Had a few factors in his favor, a few other factors not so much. Maybe my definition of "elite but not uber elite" isn't quite the same as yours; maybe it just goes to show how random this process can be.

It is much harder for girls than boys at many, many SLACs (many of them now have 60/40 F/M ratios)....

Maybe our definitions are different...this is a school with an acceptance rate under 20% (by a lot) though the ED rate is over 20%....either way, congratulations to your kid!

It's not too late if DC had another school on his preferred list.

This - can apply RD to other schools.

Actually, if he does not want a competitive school environment, and is still happy with his list, I would leave it alone.

$40,000 from Pitt?! Wow. Thought they were cutting back.

It's a nice list for a STEM major. If he is applying for CS or engineering I wouldn't aim any higher, but maybe if biology or something else. I see no need to apply anywhere else, what is he looking for that you don't see in this list of colleges?

Thanks. I think the list is fine. His friends and random kids said ‘meh’ to his list as they are applying to Ivy schools and T-20. I prepared him for this, but he is a kid and is feeling a little disappointed. I feel like maybe I should have pushed him to look at more selective schools. But not sure why, as he had no intention of going there. I guess just to appease some people.
