Dhoti ceremony is a coming of age ceremony for boys and they get to wear a dhoti for the first time.
Equivalent to Janeu (thread) ceremony for Hindu boys. https://arungovil.in/importance-of-wearing-janeu-in-hinduism.html |
| South Asian here and have never heard of this |
No need to bring gifts. If you want you can give a cash gift or check for $21, $51 or $101 in an envelope or card for each kid. |
| I grew up in the Philly suburbs and had a ceremony after I got my period 30 years ago. It was family only though, not something to which you’d invite friends and family. |
+1 I heard of this and was thankful that my family didn't do it. (No offense) My mom was given a half sari by her mom when her period began and they had a moment together, but there was no ceremony. Is having an event a family tradition? |

In some South Indian communities it’s still a huge event. The entire village is invited and it’s almost like a wedding. My grandmother wanted to have one for all her granddaughters but thankfully all her children shut down the idea. |
