I've asked the same question.
We have a neighbor who did this all during the pandemic. Listed low dollar items on FB marketplace and had people come pick things up. I couldn't understand how it was worth it to have a stranger come to your home to purchase a $5-15 item. Of course there could be issues at play that I'm not aware of but I don't think the neighbor is hurting for money. They list games that are missing pieces and try to sell them using cutesy phrases "pieces are missing but we use M&M's and then eat them after playing." No takers. Shocker. A new game costs under $10 and you're selling one that is missing pieces for $7? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for recycling and/or donating but I don't understand having strangers come to your home right now. |
They see other delusional people with the same stuff up and they're like "it sells for 100 bucks on ebay..." when nobody has bought the ebay listing. |
I assume they are the same people who waste a whole day sitting at a yardsale table of overpriced stuff. |
I had a bunch of garden statues I didn't want anymore and they were looking shabby from being out in the elements for years. I was going to trash them but my neighbor suggested to just put them on FB marketplace and if they didn't sell just offer them for free. People actually bought them and 3 people were vying for my well weathered Bodhisattva statue. To say I was surprised anyone bought them is an understatement. |
I see a lot of this from vienna mom’s Facebook listings. Sorry I don’t want your used junk when for the same price I can by brand new junk. |
especially when it's easier for me to buy the brand new junk at Target down the street than it is to find your house. |
For stuff like puzzles it’s because they don’t want it to go in a landfill |
I can see offering things for free so they don't go into a landfill, but charging for puzzles with missing pieces? It's odd. |
I absolutely think people should sell broken/dated electronics. Not only are they easy to repair, but when corporate servers discontinue a line, parts get hard to find. It behooves companies to buy a bunch of extra broken models so that when a part starts flaking they have the FEW EXISTING replacement parts. Why would this be an issue when they are HONEST about the condition? Speaking of dated furniture, I am desperate for a mint or as close to it condition sleigh chair from the 70s/80s. They slide under the table, and slide out with ease! Legs like this: but with any kind of top. In your junk site, have you seen anything like this? Please post it here if you have, and especially if it is nearby and I can sit in it. |
My pet peeve is when they sell for "what I paid". You made the mistake - take a loss. You used it - subtract a rental fee.
|
"Just trying to recover what I paid." |
My friend buys gently used stuff and when they are done, resells at a profit. I’ve seen her do this with everything from kids’ dress clothing to kitchenware to exercise equipment. |
Some of the broken/dated junk is actually valuable and because of that people think that all broken/dated junk is valuable. |
Some people can't fathom that something they find tasteful and/or valuable may hold no value at all to others. |
I applaud people who do this. Maybe I put too high a $ tag on my own time? I can see sitting at a yard sale table for 3 hours before I can see myself selling multiple items on a platform like FB marketplace and answering questions and exchanging messages with strangers. |
