high fsh

Just wondering --is it possible to get pregnant with FSH over 20? A family member just found out that that's what she has, and was told that even IVF may not be possible for her. Would appreciate to hear about others' experiences. Thanks

Yes. I had a spontaneous pregnancy with high FSH. I have a close friend who also had FSH of 20 and had a spontaneous pregnancy. We both carried to term. I doubt that she would qualify for IVF using her own eggs. The point of IVF is to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs. When the FSH is high, the ovaries can't be stimulated, or at least not enough to get a lot of eggs. IVF is a numbers game. Stimulate the ovaries, get lots of eggs, see which ones produce good embryos, hope those embryos produce babies. Fertility clinics only want women who are likely to give them good success rates. I had a number of failed IVFs and then a spontaneous pg. Depending on her age, she might consider trying on her own for a while. Donor eggs are always an option. I wish her the best and really hope it all works out for her. It's no fun to be told you have high FSH when you still want a family.

Thanks for your reply--I am so glad to hear that there is some hope! Indeed, the clinic was not at all encouraging. But it's really to hear success stries like yours. Thank you!

It depends on her age. If she is young (i.e., less than 35) then the FSH count is not considered as accurate and they should also look at the antral follicle count -- together they give a better reading of fertility. If she is older, then IVF might not be a good option as PP pointed out, but I have heard of some doctors going along with IUI.
