these kids end up living in their parent's basement. get real people.
Stop making stuff up. Or maybe you should stop romanticizing about pottery workshops, cooking competitions and theater shows and realize that one of the richest counties in the whole country has been declining academically in every measurable statistics, and that the new magnet plan that puts at the same level of importance fundamentals such as math and science with afterschool club-like activities will only make things worse. |

They are equally important which is why the schools that limit these kids academically need to be greatly improved. You clearly don’t know the elite music and theater groups where the parents have very high expectations on top of the arts which are super competitive and you regularly compete to keep your seat. |

You clearly don’t know the elite music and theater groups where the parents have very high expectations on top of the arts which are super competitive and you regularly compete to keep your seat. They simply cannot be equally important. Math and science are fundamental skills that nearly half of workforce uses regularly. Art skills are used by a selected few. I happen to be familiar with how art can be very competitive. But I still see no reason to make it an important part of a magnet system, especially not by introducing six arts magnets that serve no clear purpose. |

If you are familiar you’d know how smart these kids are. Most don’t go into music professionally. They are separate issues and kids deserve both. The issue is there is no equity in Mcps for math and science and some kids have access and others don’t. |
Yes, please shift Art magnet to more deserving schools and put STEM magnet in Woodward. |
+100 Diluted WJ will be far better than vision of Woodward. |
AP's list will be very limited in Woodward. |

Thank you! We now live in a world where excellence in academic achievement at the highest level is a bad thing, that meeting the needs of highly able children is racist and not fair. Of course, MCPS never gets to the root of problems. They just label excellent program as inequitable and something that must be contained, which will have the net effect of doing away with such programs. I am tired of Taylor tearing my community apart. |
LOL, MCSP is putting ART magnet in 6 random schools without any extra resourses and you are comparing it with Duke Ellington? |
|
I am just tired of all the talk to be honest.
There are kids in all schools who can take higher level courses. Just create a system which allows them to take those courses. Without Art magnet, even Woodward may have enough high level courses but putting an Art magnet in Woodward and then encouraging STEM kids to go poutside of Woodward means, Woodward won't be left with enough kids who can take higher level courses. As result very few higher level courses will be offered in Woodward. |
Yes, many are missing that bold part taken together will pile on each other in a negative direction. |
| STEM is assigned to Wheaton HS. Can anyone provide feedback how is it there? Up until this fall I have never even heard about Wheaton's STEM. All I knew is Blair's program. |
You haven't heard of it because their programs were only open to DCC students but within the DCC they are very popular. |
Wheaton has two STEM tracks - engineering and biomedical. Both are well-regarded and extremely hands-on. While some kids think of Wheaton as "second best" to Blair SMCS, they've actually done a great job making it distinct and hopefully serving a slightly different group of kids when it comes to interests. Here are the course progressions for each https://sites.google.com/mcpsmd.net/whsopenhouse2020/application-programs/engineering https://old.mbhs.edu/departments/magnet/courses.php https://sites.google.com/mcpsmd.net/whsopenhouse2020/application-programs/biomedical |

Shockingly, many kids who are strong in STEM are also strong in orchestra.
You need more than just math and science to get into top schools. They pick students to play violin etc. Other countries may not have jobs for creatives, but we do here in the US. Basically everyone in LA is in the business. |
