To be fair, that movie is 20 years old and I have never seen it. But she was in Crazy Rich Asians, and she just won an Oscar recently for everything everywhere all at once, so she's a star.

But yes, she can't sing--and told the director John Chu that, but he wanted her anyway.

I had heard that as well, that she turned down the part multiple times because she said she can't sing. I thought she did okay, considering that, and many of the best performers on Broadway, especially character actors, are not necessarily the best singers.

I wonder why he wanted her so badly?

She isn't much of a singer but she does look like she can kick your @$$.

I liked that feeling of power for this character

It reminded me of casting Meryl Streep as the Witch in Into the Woods. Streep is amazing in so many other things but couldn't sing to carry the part to its full potential.

Why did they make her so so wicked? I get that she was desperate to keep the feeling of being special and chosen and she was excessively spoiled as a child, but it seemed to go too far too fast. I could tell from the foreshadowing in the first movie that she would become the other witch, but I think I was hoping it would be more like Elphaba in that she was misunderstood. I guess it could just be the nature of a movie as opposed to a TV series, but I would have liked to have seen more complexity.

Despite that, I liked the movie a lot.

I agree that her character did not fit well in this movie. I thought she was great as a naive, sweet little sister in the first movie but the switch was too much for that actress. I also didn't believe that the most powerful person in Oz would be in love with a munchkin who was pining for Galinda. Then again, he's dating Arianna Grande so maybe it's me. I don't find him attractive at all.
