New "Dream Schools" from Selingo's new book ...

Essentially. Not sure who's "dreaming" to get into any of those.

DP. My kid's dream school is in the Large Leaders section. Maybe speak for yourself?

Ithaca College ??? He must be kidding or he must be receiving compensation for promoting garbage like this.

Think he graduated from there.

My son went to Gettysburg which is on this Dream School list. The author cites:

Hands-on, experiential learning
A sense of community and belonging
Strong job prospects after graduation

All true. Great school!

Are there any Nightmare schools that we need to avoid?

If it is possible to identify dream schools, then it should be possible to identify schools that exhibit the opposite characteristics.

And UC San Diego and UC Davis are actually very hard to get into if you are from a wealthy, white/asian super high performing zip code.

Why isn't UO on this list? Great school and gives $12,500 off/year for OOS good GPA (can't recall cutoff). It signed on to the Harvard amicus brief as one of only 18 schools. Great place!

One of my (very successful) law partners went there.

I didn't read the whole thread, so if someone else mentioned this, apologies.

DePauw is in Indiana....I think it's just a typo.I am surprised to see it on a list of "affordable" schools. It does give merit, but I think the number of merit scholarships for non-Indiana residents is limited. Sticker price is high for a relatively low COL area.

we did a bunch of visits out west because of a vacation and I have to say- Colorado State was amazing.

I just finished reading this book and highly recommend it. As others have said it is not just the list. If you like data and trend analysis, you will probably find the dive into the changes in the college landscape interesting. I've been on this board for 3 to 4 years and the book addresses a lot of topics that have come up here.

Nothing new for me. I figured out a long time ago that I know a ton of very happy and also financially successful people who went to places like JMU and Delaware. I went to W&M and all my friends from college seem to be doing great too.
