What did the 1550 kid do other than test well? That's the problem. Prob a boring 1-dimensional kid who sits in his room and rots.

But he’s smart. Which your TO kid is not.

Smart is fine but can you throw a football or down to swan lake? You need to go take a look at some of these institutions. Whether you like it or not, they have football teams and symphonies. And some of the departments that would be for so-called smart kids are under attack. Why are you so obsessed with smart?

Overachievers who have nothing to show for themselves besides grades and test scores

1000++×

anyone can learn how to take a test.

Apparently not since some students cannot actually break the 99th percentile. Which makes sense because it is, in fact, the top 1%, not the average.

Another round of Emory hate. I wouldn’t choose it for myself but it’s a good school that has its own niche. There aren’t that many mid-sized urban private colleges in the South. Many Emory kids would have been competitive at a number of T-50’s and SLAC’s but it has that unfortunate fallback school vibe. Sort of an afterthought for kids who aim for Ivies, Michigan, UCLA. I hope that changes and that people start respecting Emory for what it offers and the academic credentials of its students.

Someone who wants D1 Michigan and UCLA wouldn't apply to Emory. And both are easier to get into. Just because DCUM has its opinion of Emory doesn't translate to the real world.
Parchment says Emory s tied for cross admits for Dartmouth, Columbia, UVA, Georgetown, Tufts, Williams, Washington&Lee etc . And wins against UNC, BC, BU, Vassar, Wesleyan etc.

Go right ahead and spend that $400K burning a hole in your pocket on an Emory degree vs a Columbia degree, lol.

Sorry … I know… we need to stop kicking around poor old Emory.
