Stop being judgmental. He looks better than most 50 year olds.

dp.. they all start to look really older at some point, and he's 25 years older than you. Look at George Clooney. He looks like Ama's father.

His attempt to look younger with that dyed hair made it worse.

I hope your DH has great life insurance. You will then be set for life in your late 50s/early 60s.

I do not care about looks.

All of my friends complain a lot that their husbands are not helping either with housework or with children because they have a heavy workload. There is also stress about money, saving for college, retirement, etc.

I have an ironclad pre-nup by my lawyer, and the entire DH's estate goes to me in the event of his death or funds a comfortable lifestyle in the event of a divorce which he would 100% avoid at all costs.

$3.3M at 38 to raise 2 kids and through old age doesn’t seem like it’s luxury all the way. You will likely be fine but not living it up. Will your DH’s pension continue after his death?

Pension pays same amount after his death. We have $210k in 529 for both kids with college that is 11 and 13 years away. DH could have taken about $30k per year in SS that he is delaying for now as we do not need that income. House if fully paid. The $3.3 million in financial assets are currently paying $85k just in dividends (from both stocks and bonds) which is more than matching our expenses.

You live comfortably on $85K for a family of four? Where do you live?

Plues $55k in pension. So total of $140k and very little in taxes on that.

You must have good health insurance. We can retire on 140k per year but we need aca insurance so we will probably have to up it to maybe 160k.

I cannot retire otherwise I'll be broke. I'm 48 and only have $50,000 saved for retirement. I'll just work until I'm dead or forcibly removed from the work force.

at least you have a sense of humor.

I’d love to retire at 55 then go part time for another 5-10 years depending on where life is at. If I’m feeling good and like the work and can significantly add to my 401k, then yeah, I’d push it to 60.

I used to think I’d be fine with working until 67-68, but then I heard stories of retired colleagues who died shortly after retiring in their mid-60s and never really got to enjoy retirement.

Yes. And I want to travel a lot, which is harder to do in your late 60s than late 50s.

I would love to take on short term gigs when I'm 56 after my youngest goes off to college. ACA insurance is expensive. I'd work those short term gigs just to pay for the insurance, and then spend the rest of the time traveling.

PP here. Same here. My parents never got to take the European cruises they had talked about for years. Now in their 70s, they’re on medication, carry CPAP machines and are afraid to leave the country because of their health issues.

I'm planning to retire next year at 65. Between DH and I we should bring in $95,000 between pensions and SS.

Our house will be almost paid for, our cars are paid for, college payments are behind us.

Anonymous
Our house is paid off ( worth around $1.2 mln), I'm 49 and spouse 60. We have together about $1.8 mln saved in 401K, will also have pensions and SSN. No other debt. I plan on working until our child is at least in college ( in 7 years).
Anonymous
We have 2.6M and paid off house 1M. College is done. We will probably work for 7 more years. DH will have small pension and we both will have SS.
