They can get help but will not do so. I have a mentally ill brother in law who is fine when he complies with medical instructions. When he doesn’t, he is horrible. My family and my husband along with Fairfax County have done so much for him but he has free will andt cannot be forced to be human.

They arrived legally and are in the US legally. And they're probably thrilled to get out of Texas - I know the first buses, at least, were full of volunteers. There are many humanitarian issues with the situation but they're not here illegally.

Curious… why do you think they’re here legally? The articles I’ve read don’t spell it out but lots suggest these were people “caught” crossing the border. Doesn’t sound like there here legally.

They are legal because the feds are not enforcing the law and having them remain in Mexico while their case is adjudicated. They instead let them in the country, and in several months close the case because of a large backlog.

NP but if they are from Mexico then we follow the asylum laws. If they are from a different country and passed through Mexico or other countries before coming here then we follow the law and send them back to the first country they entered and have them apply for asylum there.

Except you're going to have to change the laws first. In some cases we cannot kick them out without giving them a hearing first. And we can't give them hearings because there aren't enough judges to hear their cases. And that leads to a massive backlog in cases. Which means we can't do anything for months, or even a year or two. And we also don't have enough places to put them while awaiting their hearings. So they get turned loose and told to come back when their hearing comes up.

Republicans won't authorize or fund more judges to clear the backlog. Probably because they think it will just speed up entry of foreigners. Nor will they fund facilities to house them until their hearings come up because that's "free shit for illegals." But they also won't do anything to change any of the laws that put us in this conundrum in the first place.

So there we are.

There was a Remain in Mexico policy that was abandoned by Biden Administration. Once people realized they would not have a free pass to enter America, the number of people applying dropped considerably. These are not real refugees, just people realizing there is a loophole to get in to America.
Also, many of these contractors are financing the trips from Guatemala and elsewhere.

In addition, Jeff Sessions set up a process of judges operating remotely via webcam, and also ignored the backlog and gave people immediate hearings, which also gave people a signal they would not be allowed in the country immediately, and in turn reduced the inflow.

Yes, and in that case, it made sense to shut it down. It's a financial liability for Starbucks and they are not required to keep that location open.

I personally don't believe that they are closing it for safety issues. I work nearby and I go there regularly. Although Union Station has plenty of homeless and mentally-ill-seeming folks, I never see them in that store. It's always busy, they don't have any seating or a bathroom and it's not a place where anyone hangs out or congregates. The safety thing seems like a cover for something.

Those aren't SS#s. They get work authorization, which includes a #, so they can get a legal job and make legal money, instead of living off of relatives, or welfare, or crime. Isn't it better for them to get a legal job than otherwise?

What time of day though? I always found it busy too but would almost exclusively go during rush hour. What's it like when the workers are there to open up at 4am or close at 9pm?
