Recommendations Needed for Sewer Line Insurance

Anonymous
If you have a separate “Service Line” / Sewer and Water line insurance for your home, please share what company you use and your experience with that company. This is coverage for the sewer line from the outside of your house to the city/county street, which is normally not cover by regular homeowners insurance. The coverage verse extra premium under our homeowners insurance didn’t make sense, so we are looking for separate insurance coverage. Please share your experience. Thank you.

FYI, this happened to us eight years ago - had to replace the water line not the sewer line, between the house and the street. The break in the line was ten feet or so from the house so we had no interior damage. The plumber cost $6500, the first WSSC bill was $450, and the next one was $1800. Those were adjusted later by WSSC after I told them what happened and sent them the plumber’s invoice, but I don’t remember how much of a break we got.

Your water company may offer this insurance - we didn’t have it, but at some point I did the math because we had been in the house for fifteen years when it happened and I seem to remember it was a wash. I’m not aware of a company that offers separate policies just for this. Maybe a flood policy, but check coverage carefully. Flood policies are less than $1000/year if your house isn’t in a flood zone.

We just tacked ours onto our Dominion account.

Be careful what you buy. Some policies cover only a very short distance from your house and not all the way to the connection.

We used HomeServe about 10 years ago. It was useless when we needed to replace our main water line. We canceled.

Same. We have water main line insurance through them duento good neighborhood reviews. We also added on inside plumbing coverage. They sent someone out 2 days later after we called for a leak. The company left to "go get parts" and never returned. Homeserve then refused to send someone else out. We had to call an independent plumber.

Those insurances are a scam. Just save for when it breaks

WSSC was pushing Home Serve for a few years but they stopped a while ago.

Why is it a scam from established insurance companies?

This. Most of them are a waste of money. If anything happens they'll fight you so they won't have to pay
