My child is 10 years old and has completed FCPA Swimming Levels 1 to 6. This summer is their first time participating in the FCPA summer swim league. If they end up enjoying it and want to keep swimming after the season, is a year-round club usually the next step?
We're in the Fair Oaks/Chantilly area and would love any recommendations in a 20 minute drive radius. We're hoping to find a club that's a good fit for swimmers who are newer to the sport and still learning, with coaches who focus on teaching and development. We're not necessarily looking for a super competitive environment where most kids have been swimming year-round for years already. Would appreciate any suggestions or experiences others have had! |
| If you go to the Potomac Valley Swim website, there is a list of all PVS teams. I would use it to find teams local to you and then reach out to a few to get a feel for what they offer. Good luck and have fun! |
| York has a great age group program at Oakmont Rec Center |
| Is this an activity that starts at 6am? |
| Have you looked into year rounds clubs? You might poke around online and see what their precious practice and meet schedules have been like. |
Previous, not “precious”! |

Do summer swim until they LOVE it. Summer swim is the most fun for the kids. Once they asking for more, then consider doing USA Swimming with a club year round. This is a pretty big jump in demands and isn't as fun (ie where it becomes more serious). Do not push them to year round until they want it otherwise you will kill their love of the sport.
That being said, here is the USA swimming site to find clubs near you. It will show you every pool around you where clubs practice and which clubs practice there. https://www.usaswimming.org/home/find-a-team |
But at what age is it basically too late to jump into year round to be competitive? That’s another factor. My summer swimmer is 9 and swimmers around us seem to be implying it’s too late already! I don’t really care as I don’t see mine going to swim in college or anything, but it’s a great healthy activity for now. |

OP, do a search on the PVS website teams convenient to you. Go to their websites and sign up for tryouts, which typically place this month and next. At 10, there will be a minimum expected skill set.
See where they get in and then go from there on making a decision. |
| Centreville Swim Club is a good spot for kids who are newer to the sport. They practice at Cub Run before school (not super early, basically the hour before elementary school starts) and in the afternoons at a couple other pools. There is also Marlins that practice at Cub Run in the evenings. They are a much bigger club with different groups/levels. I’m sure there is one that fits your kid but not sure if most kids in the group would be younger. York is good too, though might have the same situation where most kids new to year round swim are 9 and under. |

OP here, thank you all for the thoughtful responses and advice!
Based on the feedback, it sounds like we should be able to find a club that's a good fit, although finding one with a group of same-age peers may be a bit more challenging. Does anyone have recommendations for good coaches, either through a club or for private one-on-one lessons, to help our child develop skills a little more quickly so they can gain confidence and potentially be closer to their age group's level by next year? Someone who can focus on solid fundamentals while still making the sport enjoyable. |
| Machine has morning practices in Oakmont for that age group. Its from 6:30-8am before school and they have a great group of kids! If you are looking for summer swim teams in that area, Fair Oaks has a NVSL team and the pool has no wait list. If you join a summer team or a swim club, the coaches and lifeguards usually do private lessons on the side for a reasonable price. |
It's no where close to too late. My DS was a solid, but not star, summer swimmer. He joined club 2x a week at age 10, and didn't have a problem keeping up. He moved to a more intense practice group when he was 13. |
We are already in summer swim league at FCPA for this summer https://fairfax.usedirect.com/FairfaxFCPAWeb/Activities/Details.aspx?session_id=606409&back_url=fi9BY3Rpdml0aWVzL1NlYXJjaC5hc3B4 |
| Another vote for CSC, which is a great 'starter' club and has practices convenient to OP. I'd also recommend Fairfax Foxes but not sure they'll be able to take more kids this year. Third rec would be Makos, but their starter groups can be competitive to get into. |
