Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
We have half-day K at our neighborhood elementary. I work part-time and am considering using the after-K SACC (until 3 pm) next year. We do not need SACC until 6 pm. Any parents out there who can comment on what they think/thought of the after-K SACC program at their children's school? Are there enrichment activities or is it more of a holding area for kids? Would you use the after-K SACC again, or not? Thanks.
We have 1/2 day K. IMO SACC was better than the K experience. K teacher was overwhelmed by outside commitments and lack of support and SACC had an incredible group of teachers. However, I think each school is a bit different. FWIW, overall SACC has been a good thing.
Thank you for responding. Glad to know SACC was a positive experience for your child. I'm not really expecting much from K since the classroom time is so limited and class size is an unknown. I will try to get more information from parents in the neighborhood. Many families have one stay-at-home parent so I don't think they will know much about the SACC program.
My son loved after-K SACC. It had activities, but was much less structured than kindergarten. After K, a whole herd of kids went over to SACC togethr and had fun. it was a lso a good socializing experience with his new classmates.
This was our experience as well. My kids loved after-K SACC. |
I've heard good things about the program and am registering my son for next year. If you haven't already signed up for SACC do it now because most schools have a wait list, especially for after school care. If your K is only half day, I image it will be even more difficult to secure a spot (but it totally depends on the school). Sign up usually begins in July for the next year. I called in August and was already waitlisted!! Good luck. I will find out in the Spring if I got in or not.
Kids in After-K SACC are guaranteed a spot in after school SACC. Sweet deal.
it is getting expensive -- $300 per month. if you could find a way to take care of the kids for only a couple of hrs, that money or part of it could be saved. it is a fun/safe place for the kids to go for the full-time working parents. and it is cost competitive comparing with other private after school care places. dont expect that your kids could learn a lot or gain other skills (social skills maybe).
OP here again. Thanks for your opinions. Glad to hear your children liked the program! Our choice will be whether to enroll our kindergartener in after-K SACC or enroll in 1-2 fun classes/activities per week (and have babysitter transport). Aside from any cost considerations, I'm leaning toward the after-K SACC. Thanks again, parents!
To clarify, kids in After-K SACC are guaranteed a spot in after school SACC the following school year (first grade). I called in July to get my child onto the waiting list, and though we are in the After-K program, we were like #130 on the waiting list for after school (which like the OP, I prob. won't need since i work part-time and can prob. get home in time to get my child off the bus at 3:45). My understanding however is that if I need after-school SACC the next year, we're guaranteed a place. |
