My rising 9th grader was thinking about enrolling in Foundations of Computer Science online this summer, but we couldn't tell much about what was covered. Is there a syllabus or topics listed somewhere? TIA.
Course description on the MCPS website ITC2083A/ITC2083B Found Computer Sci TE A Exploring Computer Science courses present students with the conceptual underpinnings of computer science through an exploration of human computer interaction web design computer programming data modeling and robotics while these courses include programming the focus is on the computational practices associated with doing computer science rather than just a narrow focus on coding syntax and tools. |

Ours was mostly very intro JavaScript for drawing pictures, like very intro Scratch. Also a little HTML.
It's like what you see at very intro level summer camps for ES/MS. |
Oh wow-is it really that basic? My kid didn’t take it during the school year because they wanted to do a music elective but I feel bad putting them in a summer class if it’s not that good of a class. |
| It's an easy way to get an AP credit. |
| Do health ed over the summer first. |
Foundations of Computer Science is NOT an AP class. |
| You can get the tech credit through MC. Somebody on another thread posted a huge spreadsheet of which MC classes count for MCPS credit. Many seem way more interesting than MCPS classes. |
| It’s a trash class. |
| I would do the other tech credit option (engineering) over that one. |
Summer is better than wasting the whole year |
My kid is still in middle school so excuse me for the dumb question - how does this work? A kid in any MCPS high school can go to Montgomery College for courses that say MC in the spreadsheet and skip school time? |
