Requesting a functional chromebook?

Anonymous
DD had issues with her MCPS chromebook this year, and her school was surprisingly unhelpful. She is registered for the August SAT, and I don't want her chromebook to suddenly shut down like it did during her AP exams last week. Previously it's also lost charge really quickly, and the screen is separating from the plastic casing.

Is there a way to exchange her iffy chromebook with a more reliable one? Do we need to request this of Central Office? I recall getting chromebooks from Central Office during the pandemic...

Thanks.

Your daughter should take her Chromebook to the media center - they should be able to either repair or swap it out for a new one.

OP here thanks, PP, she already tried to do that and the person in the library said they couldn't help her. ??? I thought that was so weird.

That is weird - I’m a media assistant at an elementary school and that’s something we deal with all the time. I’d call the office and see if they can direct you.

Or reach out to the ITSS/media service technician assigned to the school. The media specialist should have been able to help you, though. It's what they're supposed to do.

You may want to just say it was lost and she needs a new one. I think they will charge you but it’s not that much. We discovered we had lost the MS one when my kid went to return it and was informed that he’d been using someone else’s Chromebook. Or just buy a cheap Chromebook at Costco or Sam’s Club if you can afford it and tuck the crappy McPS one away.

School one is required for some exams

+1 Having a functional laptop is important. Tell your kid to reach out in writing, and do some helicopter parent style escalation if it isn't successful.

School has extra chromebooks for testing.

Not for sat

I guess it depends on the school but we have something like eighty extra chromebooks as replacements or for testing purposes.

Beyond that I wouldn't pay for a full replacement. The Lenovo 300e models can be gotten for pennies (not literally) on ebay.

Unless it's the newer 500e or 100e. Those can cost a bit more but I was able to pick up one from.ebsy for fifty dollars.

OP here. Thanks, I emailed my kid's counselor to start with, asking who was in charge of chromebooks.

DD is taking the SAT in August and needs a school chromebook that has Bluebook installed plus whatever the College Board tells MCPS to add to that.
