Auto/Home/Umbrella

Starting to shop around as my current Erie renewal came in pretty high.

So for I received quote from Farmers, State Farm and Hanover that seem to be in line in terms of coverage with less premiums.

Hanover is in line with Erie in terms of cost but offers more coverage

Farmers is about $1000 less than Erie for same coverage. I don't like the fact that they quote 6months on Auto. Erie and Hanover quote 12 months.

State Farm is about $2200 less than Erie for same coverage. Again, they also quoted only 6 months on Auto.

Anyone had/have Farmers, State Farm or Hanover?

Care to share your experience?

I don’t really like that State farm is captive agents and I don’t really trust their homeowners policies, esp after the news from Calif., but that’s not based on direct experience.

I used to manage a large commercial fleet and have dealt with all of them. Erie/ Chubb/ USAA are the only ones that still have customer service & real claim handling. State Farm is by far and away the worst.

Amica has great customer service, but it's sometimes quite expensive. They were also very concerned with our home inspection while others were not.

We have State Farm and the cost is very reasonable for very high coverage, but we've never made a claim.

DS had an accident with Erie (totaled car and passenger injury) and they did not raise our rates because we had been 15 years accident free. We are sticking with them

My State Farm umbrella went up 250% from last year with no claims. Is this a trend people are seeing across the board?

State Farm forces you to litigate claims against them so when they lose, they lose big.

Progressive, State Farm, Geico bundles you should quote too.

Erie has strict underwritting guidelines. My kid had two accidents and she moved out and no longer in my house or access to car for over one year and Erie still was holding it against me. The only company from all I quoted. I need to do audit and home together to get good price.

How much Geico 1,300 for six months, Progressive 1,450 six months and Erie $4,500 for one year. But I got home insurance for $800 less if I bundle. And Erie counted auto accident in my home insurance as they said I am more likely to file a claim.

State Farm was cheapest in my search last month of bundling home and auto. Progressive is $300 more my current one but may not switch as roof is old and State Farm wants an inspection of house. My roof is like 25-30 years old.

We use State Farm for everything. Car went up. The 4 million umbrella on top of car is about $1000 a year this year. Can't recall what it was last year.

We have Maine Mutual through a broker. Our increase was insane (and was the prior year too.) We reshop every year but it's never cheaper to switch. Every year we raise our deductible (again!) and STILL pay higher premiums.

I feel like this is the real inflation no one is talking about. This hurts me a lot more than gas or eggs.

I was rear-ended by a State Farm driver, minor accident, not injured and had an $1600 estimate to get my car fixed. Once it was at the body shop State Farm got into a pissing match with the shop about a $180 parts supplement. This went on for 3 months, I had to get an attorney involved to get it straightened out. Long story short, State Farm paid over $10,000 to close a claim that would have only cost them $2,000 over $180.

Chubb is known for being a one stop shop for insurance of high net worth households; they arguably have the best customer service and claims handling. They also wrap a lot of stuff into their policies most homeowner's underwriters won't touch (art, planes, etc.) When our agent has shopped our coverage they have always been in the same ballpark as Erie.

OP here. Appreciate all the feedback so far. My agent searched some other providers and this is what they came back:

Travelers quoted $8,050,
Nationwide is at $8,200,
Utica National is $11,700.
