Why was the media so cruel to Michael Jackson?

Anonymous
He became a meme and the butt of all jokes. Interviewers were so condescending and rude to his face. Why was this happening? It’s shocking to watch how he was treated today.
Anonymous
Because he abused innocent children.
Anonymous
Because he was a total weirdo with a plastic surgery obsession.

The media was incredibly cruel to celebrities through the early 2000s. Asking Britney Spears about her virginity and Brooke Shields about being sexy.

Didn't Oprah also ask Michael Jackson if he was a virgin?

For most of his life he refused to be interviewed then the scandals hit and he relented. Unfortunately Barbara Walter’s, Diane Sawyer and Oprah Winfrey started capitalizing on this “inquiring minds want to know” fake journalism. The earliest cringeworthy interviews I recall were done by Joan Rivers and Johnnie Carson. She’d call her female guests fat and Johnnie Carson would ask his black guests how they spent their money.

They’re still cruel to Britney. They should just leave her alone. (I understand she doesn’t help with the dancing videos she puts out.)

Because of the things he did.

I am not saying it was right but he wasn’t exactly faultless.

For example, it was clearly obvious that he had a nose job…maybe several as well as lightened his skin color tremendously.
However instead of being transparent (no pun intended), he would publicly deny doing so even though even Stevie Wonder would know he was lying.

That is why some people didn’t believe it when he denied abusing young boys.

The general logic is that most people believe if someone is comfortable lying about small things - - then they are usually comfortable about lying about everything else.

I think when people choose to lie (it IS a choice after all!) then they give up all possible credibility of integrity……..

Is this even a question? He was a predator and also just very deeply troubled.

Fwiw from a close source lightening his skin was cosmetic. It wasn't driven by an underlying medical issue.

He acted bizarre and weird, spoke bizarre and weird, and acted bizarre and weird. Examples:

- saying it’s normal and loving to have children in your bed
- incredibly wealthy and had a stream of unrelated younger males in and out of his home
- continued to host boys and their families at Neverland Ranch following the 1993 and 2003 child sexual abuse accusations
- engaged in childlike activities (climbed trees, water balloon fights)
- named a baby Blanket
- dangled a baby outside a hotel room
- wore surgical masks (which was very unusual then)
- transformed his estate an amusement park complete with a private zoo, Ferris wheel, etc
- inconsistent - initially claimed older two kids were conceived naturally, Rowe later stated in interviews that the process was through artificial insemination

These are not normal. His appearance, voice, statements and actions made him a person of fascination but not in a good way. He had a difficult upbringing and there were definite repercussions of that. It was like watching a train wreck.

Sorry but some of the things you list make him awesome. Since when is climbing trees a reason to be shunned? And turning his home into an amusement park? Even more badass.

People are ridiculous.

Climbing trees in the middle of an interview is different than doing it while hiking or out with friends. And no, childless adults don’t turn properties into amusement parks.

But let’s say those things make him awesome. What about the other things I wrote:

Are these normal? When you read them do you think they made him a badass or odd? How many famous people are interviewed and then asked if their marriage was consummated? When he married Presley’s daughter or had kids with Debbie…these were questions that seemed appropriate for HIM bc he was odd and people wondered these things.

I like his music and think he was talented but he was troubled and did troubling things. Do you deny this?

You seemed to gloss over the children in his home and his bed. He was not badass. He was inappropriate at best, a child molester at worst.

You are so mean.

You are picking on him for not being “normal.” He was not normal; he was a creative visionary genius with a very extraordinary life.

He was an eccentric genius who was deliberately bullied and made fun of and picked on by the media and the public. This post itself proves it.

He can do whatever he wants with his hard earned money. Having “child like interests” is not a crime.

You are kidding right? You cannot see why? It quite obvious to most.

Do you not understand how inappropriate it is to ask him if he consummated his marriage to his wife? Are you guys insane?? He is allowed to do whatever he wants in his marriage and how his babies however he wants as long as he is not hurting anyone!
