How Does Your NVSL Team Handle Monday Meet Event Selection?

Anonymous
What are your teams’ rules for swimmers who compete in Saturday meets and what events they may swim in the following Monday meet?

Are swimmers allowed to compete in the same strokes they swam on Saturday, or are there restrictions in place, such as:
•not being allowed to swim any of the same strokes,
•being allowed to repeat strokes only if they did not place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd,
•being allowed to swim the same events but not receive an official time,
•or another policy entirely?

Would love to hear how other teams handle this.

Cannot swim any stroke they swam Saturday, regardless of place. The thinking is that every swimmer gets one chance per week to swim that event for their ladder spot. Obviously, this system still favors the A meet swimmers because they get more events in total per week.

We have other rules surrounding ribbon eligibility on Mondays depending on A meet participation.

Our team doesn’t allow swimmers to swim in any event they placed 1-3 in on Saturday. It’s a great opportunity to practice their other strokes!

Not allowed in general to swim anything where they placed 1-2-3, but sometimes exceptions are made and they are allowed to swim exhibition. The most recent one I remember was a swimmer wanting to pace a friend so the friend could take her A meet spot in that stroke.

Not allowed to swim same stroke regardless of place. Some exceptions like the B Meet before Relay Carnival.

Our pool does the if you placed in the nest you can’t swim that stroke the next week but come on, those kids at the A meets swim abd place each week so if they didn’t place that week in that event they placed the week before. I don’t get how this is fair as the faster kids get more chances to swim faster and more practice getting faster so they swim faster.

I think the developmental B meets should only be for developmental B swimmers. It makes no sense that the kids that swim fast get to do them at all.

There is an wkurust feeling at our pool from the A swimmers, the whole season is about them.

In general a swimmer is not allowed to swim the same stroke they swam the previous Saturday (unless they dqd) without coach permission. We have a pretty big team and that third lane does move around.

You cannot swim anything you swam on Saturday regardless of place. There are some exceptions for the 8&Us because they might not have other strokes they can swim.

We generally are limited to two events at B meets (IM is an event). Some B meets the A meet swimmers cannot swim in either or they get less events.

Our coach does not let relay carnival or ASR swimmers swim in the B meet that same week. It helps curb numbers and keeps total swims similar around the team.

Our team used to only allow them to repeat strokes if they did not place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that stroke and then they could only swim one event.

A few/several years back the rules were changed and everyone can swim in 2 events no matter what they swam in the A meet, but if they placed 1st-3rd in the A meet they would be unofficial and don’t get a place ribbon at the B meet, but the time is still entered into the system and used by the coach for comparing swimmer times to determine who swims what in relays etc. We have a small team so if we didn’t let the A meet swimmers into the meet there wouldn’t be enough volunteers.

D1 team, not allowed to swim any of the same events swum the previous Saturday, even if trying to make Divisional Relays. Only allowed two events at B meets, and IM is included. Once on a Divisional Relay, that group is set even if another swimmer is faster between Divisional Relays and ASRs.

Everyone, regardless of what they swam on Saturday, is allowed to swim 2 events on Monday, plus they can swim the IM as a third stroke if they want. Depending on how they placed on Saturday, they may end up swimming exhibition on Monday.

Same with our team, with an exception for 8 and under. Some of them are fast in free and back but cannot swim breast and fly especially early in the season.

Maybe this works for a really big team, but I much prefer having the team come together for B meets. Otherwise, it feels like two separate teams? We have a pretty small team at this point, and so often have our slower swimmers filling in at a meets. It’s very fluid (especially with vacations and other commitments) and more like having a meet on Saturdays where the coaches tell you what to swim, and one on Mondays where you swim for yourself.

We let the swimmers swim what they want with restrictions on 2 strokes vs 3, if they swam the A meet. They also can't ribbon (ie it's a time only event) if they placed at the A. Most of the kids do worse at the B meets on their A meet strokes, so most kids choose to swim a non-A meet stroke.

Let them swim what they want.
