Why is May 27th a non instructional day?

It's not memorial day. It's not an option for a make up day. I'm confused

Why is April 15 a non instructional day when it’s a designated makeup day?

May 27 is Eid.

The time to discuss the calendar was a year ago.

It’s almost like you are looking at it for the first time because you are Big Mad about the snow days and think you can magically find substitute dates or something. But I know you.m wouldn’t do such an arrogant and clueless thing, right?

Tell that to the people who demanded March 20th revert back to a non-instructional day.

First, I have no idea. So I googled "May 27 holiday". Google told me that May 27, 2026 is...

National Sunscreen Day
National Grape Popsicle Day
National Cellophane Tape Day
World Otter Day
and possibly National Senior Health and Fitness Day

My guess is we are observing National Grape Popsicle Day

There are two. May 27 is the other one.

March 20 is Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. May 27 is Eid al-Adha, marking Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son. Both are big occasions across the Muslim world and often more than 1 day off.

Fwiw March 20 is also Nowruz which is the Persian new year, celebrated in Iran but also Turkey and Afghanistan. Also a very important holiday. Usually the Muslim holidays don't coincide with Nowruz (which is pre-Islamic.)

Why so we have a random Wednesday off? Is it so MCPS staff can file their taxes?

For the folks asking about April 15, it's right on the MCPS calendar that this is a non-instructional day due to grading for the 3rd quarter. And the grading and planning days have always been non-instructional days from what I recall. I'm not sure why this was designated as a possible make-up day though, because I assume (but am not certain) that the grading days off are contractual.

Yeah, these planning days were a hill the union died on. There's no way they're giving those back for a snow day because it will demonstrate the planning days aren't actually needed. So, that's a non-starter.

Just to give you something to whine about.

But then why list it as "M" for makeup anyways? https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/calendar/pdfs/2026-2027/2026-2027-TRADITIONAL-Calendar.pdf
October 16, November 2, March 9 are listed with an *. April 16 has an * but it's green (regular school day). I'm guessing they intended to put that on April 12.
