Is it possible to "expunge" a class from a high school transcript, including a summer course? My 7th grader wants to take Geometry HN this summer but has a backup plan to expunge it and take Geometry in 8th grade if it doesn't work out. His counselor mentioned it to him, but I'm not familiar with the process. Can anyone share insights on this? I'm very confused .Thanks!

| Yes, anyone who takes a HS class before 8th grade graduation can expunge that HS class from their transcript. All you need to do is email a form to their guidance counselor. |

Yes, MS students can expunge a HS grade from their transcript.
Geometry over the summer means 6-9 hours of work a day. Kids have to be able to teach themselves the material or learn it from online videos, there is limited instruction. They have multiple quizzes a day. I would ask your kid why they want to do this and what they think they get out of it. It is a lot. The kids who see to do well with the class are kids who have been taking Geometry through something like AoPS, RSM, or schools like Curie. |
| I have a funny feeling the plan has always been to take the geometry class over the summer and half ass it. And then repeat it in 8th but be able to coast. |
If that is the plan, then take the RSM summer Geometry class and coast through Geometry. You don’t have to worry about half assing it and expunging, it takes up less time in the day and over a shorter period of time. |
It is more expensive to take RSM though. Perhaps the family is cheap? |

If you don’t think that the kid is going to do well then why waste 6 weeks of summer taking a class that you are going to expunge. Just sign up for one of the summer pre classes that would prepare the kid and save their summer vacation.
I don’t understand why kids take Geometry in the summer, my kid could have but thought it was a crazy idea. |
One word: TJ. If kid does well in geometry in the summer, they are ahead then. |

My kid is applying for TJ. He would have aced geometry over the summer, he has prior Geometry experience. It wasn’t keen on the idea because he likes summer camp.
A kid wanting to go to TJ wouldn’t be worried about expunging the class. If you are thinking of applying to TJ and you think you are not going to ace Geometry in the summer, then you shouldn’t be applying to TJ. |
TJ has an advanced cohort of students who are taking AP Precalculus or higher in 9th grade (many of these students chose to take Honors Geometry over the summer). These students are the only students allowed to take honors Chemistry in 9th grade, meaning they are able to take multiple AP science classes starting in 10th grade and able be able to take more advanced science offerings earlier. When it comes to college admissions into top 20 schools, particularly for any science majors, the students taking the most advanced science courses will have an advantage over students who didn’t have those opportunities. These students will also have the opportunity to have higher GPAs because they will be able to take more 5.0 weighted AP classes than their peers. Honors Chemistry in 9th for those students was a new policy for the 2025-2026 school year. Parents of current 7th graders planning to apply to TJ should consider this when deciding on summer plans. |
Yes they would. TJ kids are very grade conscious and if they got anything less than an A in summer geometry , they probably would expunge the course. But obviously the kids wants to try it and try for an A and has a backup plan if they get less than an A (expunge course). Mom is on board and trying to verify expunging is an option and playing the “I’m so confused” card. This is obviously a very calculated move by the family. |
My kid is at Carson and has friends in Pre Calc and the like. More power to them, I guess. Different kids, even smart kids, value different experiences. DS choose summer camp and time with friends because getting a year ahead in math to take extra classes wasn’t worth it to him. None of his friends who took summer Geometry worried about expunging the grade because they all knew the material and that they would get an A. Plenty of kids hear their friends taking the class and decide they want to take it and then are shocked t how hard it is because they don’t have the background in the material. They don’t make summer plans, start a class and realize they are in over their head, and either drop it or expunge it. You shouldn’t take Geometry in the summer unless you know you will Ace it or be fine with a C or a B. Lots of kids attend TJ with Algebra 2 as their starting math class, they do just fine. Some kids are making poor choices because of peer pressure to be more advanced and are working outside their abilities. No clue if OP is one of those kids or not but the boards have plenty of topics of kids taking Geometry over the summer and being shocked at how much work it is, how much the kids have to teach themselves, and how they have to drop or expunge the grade. Just make a choice that makes sense for your kid. Some kids really want to accelerate in math, some parents really want their kids to accelerate in math. It works for some but not as many as you would think. |
| The only kids who even think about taking Geometry over the summer are kids who want TJ and who are falling for the peer pressure. It’s really sad. |
