Essie McGuire picks a fight with County Government

Hours after that contentious briefing, the school district’s chief of staff emailed councilmembers with a rebuttal.

Essie McGuire’s email, reviewed by The Banner, emphasized that, while school officials are responsible for clearing snow from campuses, it’s the county’s job to clear streets and sidewalks beyond school grounds.

During Tuesday’s council briefing, the county’s chief administrative officer said the first formal communication from the school system after the storm — a list of problem roads within the county — arrived Feb. 1, a week after snow and ice walloped the region.

“Bam, we were on it,” Rich Madaleno told the council.

“We’ve got to have a better communication with MCPS,” he added. “We should be dealing with them from the very first moment.”

McGuire’s email pushed back, saying school officials communicated with county staff much earlier, starting with a Montgomery County Emergency Management Zoom call Jan. 23.

“MCPS had ongoing engagement with MCDOT,” she wrote.

She told The Banner on Wednesday that, after the council briefing, school officials felt they needed to set the record straight.

“Our concern was that the council briefing left an impression that MCPS had not fulfilled its responsibilities, and we refute that,” McGuire said.

Essie has a lot of nerve. Almost EVERY agency that interacts with MCPS says they are not collaborative and not communicative. Whether it's HHS, the OIG or the police. And she wants us to believe MCPS is blameless and instead decides to play the "it's not my job game" with the county government she relies on to fund and support MCPS?

That does not seem like the smart political move at all.

I get she wants to correct the record. Unfortunately, MCPS has had and continues to have a bad relationship with the Council and at lot of that is on their end. On top of that, the fact is the County Government was fully open Tuesday through Friday of last week (along with most other workplaces), while MCPS offices were closed the entire week. So I just have a lot of trouble having sympathy for them.

Most school bus stops are on private property and it is not the County's responsibility to clear those. And as someone else pointed out, trash service occurred all last week and I haven't heard of any issues with trash trucks navigating the streets. So yeah, MCPS needs to take a long hard look at what it means to be truly collaborative because how they do it is not it.
