| My child is applying to private school from MCPS (Montgomery County public school) elementary school. We asked our current MCPS school to send transcript in November, but till now the school has not done that yet and does not provide a timeline. Anyone else in the same situation? Is this a problem for the whole MCPS or just our school? |
| OP this is handled at the school level. Is it possible the staff member thought they needed to wait until Q2 grades were released before sending the transcript? Or did your request not reach the staff member who handles transcripts? In middle and high schools, someone in the counseling office handles this. They are pretty efficient. |

It’s usually the principle or register at the school. Not just MCPS. Some people just don’t want to cooperate.
When DS was applying there was a school he attended that never provided documentation requested by one of the schools he applied to and that was the only school he didn’t get into. She kept saying she would send it, but never did. If I had to do it over, I’d contact the superintendents office and request the information from them since I couldn’t get it from the school. |

OP here. My request did reach the right person who is responsible for transcripts; however, requests were either unanswered or answered only with vague language (no timeline, no explanation, etc.).
I am wondering whether this is normal across MCPS, which would suggest there is a broader reason for the delay that has not been explained, or whether this issue is specific to our school. If you have a child in an MCPS elementary school, please share whether you were able to have the transcript sent. |
I'm sorry to hear your DS has to go through this. Thanks for sharing your experience. |
| I had a similar experience years ago. I went to the school office and spoke with the person who handles the transcripts etc and she then processed the documents. I think that it’s one of those things that is not a school priority and gets lost in the cracks. Our kid was just a number at the school so an individual request like ours—particularly when it meant we were preparing to leave—was not something the admin care much care to. |
Especially if there is any hate or animosity coming from the the schools administration. |
| It is not normal across MCPS. I have applied out twice from two different MCPS elementary schools and have never had an issue. I’d go into the front office at the school in person and chat with the individual responsible for sending out transcripts and elevate it to the principal if need be. |
| I’m not sure the private school forum folks are going to be able to give an accurate read on what is common across an entire public school system. |

At my school - we had ours sent, but a classmate (applying to the same school) did not.
I had gone up to the school in person, had a letter typed our clearly with all the information they could possibly need (student #, name, grade etc). The letter was in addition to the email. I provided an envelope that was pre-addressed and had more postage on it than could ever be needed. I asked how long it would take to get it done and they responded not long. So I offered to stop in next day to mail it for them. They have a lot of requests - make it easy for them to complete your request |
But there are many ex-MCPS students across the whole county currently in DC area privates. I think OP was smart to come here. |
