Can someone give me the gist of this for my rising 9th grader- they take the course through MCPS - Virtually?
Time of day? Worth it to get it over with/benefit of doing it at summer? Any slack for missed sessions? Hon Health A Did your kid do both in one summer? Were they different in terms of workload? Do I need to sign up As soon as registration opens? I see the fees, and they are doable. Anything else? |

DS took Health A online during the school year. It was 6 weeks. The work came fast and furious. It was A LOT of work. I can't imagine doing it all in the 9 days allocated for summer school. The topics are boring (and have already been covered in PE Health, Bio, and some of the guidance counselor push ins) and school is from 8 or 8:30 -2:30 each day.
It just seems like a very challenging format to cover the content. If you want this, I would sign up earlier rather than later. It's alwasy easier to withdraw than to find an open spot later. |
| Summer school, as of this summer, will have fewer online offerings, and I don't know whether this impacts health classes, but to answer your other questions: the kids need Health A and B to graduate. My kid did both during the summer before 9th grade, to get it out of the way. The content is quite repetitive and the classes are not difficult at all. She didn't miss any, so not sure how much leeway there is for that. It's always good to register ASAP, especially if MCPS is trying a new approach this summer. |
| Both my kids did it. There is usually both a daytime and an evening class -- mine did the evening, think it was like 7:00-8:30. Half the days were Zoom lessons, half the days were asynchronous. Definitely plan to spend the asynchronous days churning through the work. There is a lot of it, but it is mostly busy work and not very hard. As long as your kid stays on top of all the assignments, it's an easy A. Much better to get it over in a few weeks over the summer than to spend a full school year on it. |

Mine did both online over the summer. For them, it was far preferable than wasting an entire year on it. It also enabled them enough elective space to take both advanced language classes and 4 years of music ensembles.
They actually found a few of the topics interesting, but the summer pace was just about right, and they were able to get the outside activities done on their own time, between summer jobs and activities. For my kid with inattentive ADHD, an easy, relaxed class with lots of busy work is usually a recipe for disaster. They’d been dreading having to take it during the school year. But I think the compressed summer time frame made everything feel urgent enough that they were able to get it all done, and done well. I’d say if your student needs a specific session or time, you’d need to sign up soon, to be safe. |
As for slack on missed sessions: officially, there’s none. Unofficially, depends on the instructor. There was one session where we hadn’t realized until the course had already started that kid’s sleepaway counselor job would require them to miss the last synchronous Health session. The instructor said it was fine, as long as they continued to turn their assignments in on time. Made an A in the class, and it sounded like that final class was mostly addressing student questions on the remaining assignments. But the other session they took covered new material and assignments all the way up to the final synchronous online session. (Kid did say that teacher was generally better and more engaged than the other one.) So I wouldn’t go into it counting on slack being offered for missed sessions—my kid may have just gotten lucky. |

I just meant in an emergency situation, would not intentionally enroll knowing there are conflicts :So I wouldn’t go into it counting on slack being offered for missed sessions—my kid may have just gotten lucky.

The online one is for 90 mins in the evening. It is the in-person one that is 8:00-2:30. |

Online is 7-8:30 PM synchronously only this year. Parents can’t register, only counselors who will be the gatekeepers of whether your child can take it or not.
“ Synchronous instruction will meet daily for 1.5 hours each class.” https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/extendedhours/summerschool/central-high-school-summer-school-program/ I’ve heard there is an online option during the school year but don’t have any info about it. |
| evening - like every school day? |
I think it’s every Monday-Thursday from July 7-21 and then July 23-August 6. The website says for a total of 13.5 synchronous hours. |
Boring. And work..not hard but work. Positive: get it done. |
| It was boring and B felt like a repeat of A. Kid did both online in summer school. A before 9th and B before 10th. I thought it was well worth it to knock it out, though it’s pricey now. I thought doing it over two summers made it less painful but also argument for knocking it out before 9th if anticipate bigger things in summer. |
Don’t pay for health for summer school. They can take 0 or 9th period during the school year at no cost. |
How? Counselor specifically ignores my questions about this option or summer. She will answer any other questions except about health. Does she not understand the MCPS summer School website says “see your child’s counselor for more information”? I wish parents could register without using the counselor |
