What’s the YTD Snow Day count?

Anonymous
I’ve lost track. So last week there were 4, since Monday was already off for students. Tomorrow makes 5. How many did we use before this storm?

We had already taken at least 1... we need to make up at least 3 to even apply for a waiver for the others.

So 6 days in total. Does a waiver mean that MCPS just asks for permission to ignore that they didn’t get to 180 days of instruction and shortchange the kids by 3 days?

Yes pretty much.

That’s a pretty good incentive for McPS to keep schools closed if there is even a hint of ice on the ground.

Why open schools if you can get a waiver and stay home and add some useless half days on in June?

Meanwhile other Maryland schools are at least doing virtual instruction.

No guarantee MD grants the waiver, particularly if MCPS doesn’t even attempt to use the days it already has designated as potential makeup days

Well then MCPS will do what it did last year and add days in June while also saying they understand that families have other plans and they don’t expect students to come in.

And teachers will get paid to show videos to the 20 pct of kids who show up. Shameful.

When? I don't remember any snow days before this, just delayed opening.

You don’t remember the early uproar when they closed and also prevented childcare from closing and then in the same week decided not to close?

Yes it was just delayed opening in December. 4 snow days last week and the one tomorrow.

5 days total so far and MCPs only has one snow day programmed into its calendar. The other Maryland districts I know of have 3 snow days in their calendar.

As a parent using childcare I remember the day you're talking about very clearly-- they had a delayed opening (so elementary schools opened at 11:20) but did not allow before-school care to open at all so parents couldn't get to work until noon (despite high schools and all-day early childhood centers in schools being able to open at 9, and the weather being purely rain in many areas of the county.)

Was there some separate day school was closed?

Ah okay. I could have sworn we were fully closed.

Correct. They did not close school for a full day this school year until last week.
