| Hello, I know there are lots of posts about next year’s classes, but this one hasn’t come up as much. How hard are AP comp sci and AP Human Geography for a freshman? This is at oakton. She’s going to be taking all hns, alg 2 hns, summer p.e which gives her an extra elective, spanish 2, and the one elective left we are thinking about AP comp sci if it is manageable. Thoughts? |
| AP comp sci is just python. One of the easier ones I think. Ap Human Geo is honestly kind of pointless unless you wanna explore. |
| My kid is thinking about taking AP Comp Sci Principles ... wont sit for the test but wants the bump in GPA and apparently some older kids told her it's not too bad. My kid has no preference for coding at all but wanted to gain some general knowledge in computing. |
| What sport or instrument does she play? Or what are her extra curricular activities? |
| My 9th grader is enjoying AP Human Geography very much. She says it’s not hard and is taking this instead of her history class at a different school. They have a lot of discussions and she likes that is has mixed grade levels. |
She does cross country, rec swimming/dive on weekends, piano, and art afterschool. |
| But don’t they have to take Bio? |
Bio is a science class. AP human geo is a history class and AP comp sci is an elective. |
| AP CS A is Java. |
Really? We were told it was python. (Is AP comp sci principles python then?) |
Can you share more details? e.g., what percentage of the python class is algorithm? |
Definitely Java. Labs are easy, tests are very hard. Python was in the non AP class, I forget the name of the class. |
Who is driving this schedule - you or your child? Make sure you’re not overloading her as she transitions to high school. The workload generally was a lot more than middle school for our kids. |
| Oldest took comp sci A which is Java - it was easy for him because he had been developing for years - not easy for all kids. Debating if this next one will take it because he has bonded background. Otherwise AP freshman year is unusual. |
My kid’s 5 on the AP Human Geography exam got her out of a gen ed requirement at UVA. So, in her case, it was not a pointless class. |
