Colombia - to go or not?

We have a tripped booked to Colombia in 3 weeks. This was planned more than 6 months ago.

I have been to Cartagena briefly and wanted to go back for an extended time to see more of it and other parts of the country. Our trip is 10 days to Cartagena, coffee country, and Medellin.

Now with what is going on in Venezuela and the rhetoric Trump is saying about Colombia, I am having second thoughts on the trip. My concern is not being able to leave the country, anti-American sentiment, or worst kidnapping/hostage situation.

I looked up the travel advisory and now Colombia is a level 3.

Am I over-reacting here? Should we go or not? We are not hispanics and it will be very obvious we are Americans.

Those are super touristy places. You won't feel any impacts there.

I wouldn't worry about anti-American sentiment. Colombians are tourist friendly, and won't blame you for the Trump craziness.

I would be worried about Trump invading and you not being able to get out because of airspace restrictions.

Just ended a trip there yesterday. It was fine.

Just take Level 3 precautions.

The only reason we were held up is our destination was restricted. We were prepared to fly to a non-restricted area if necessary.

Colombia has been Level 3 since April, which was presumably before you even made your reservations. It's not new.

To be fair, things have gotten more risky there in the last few days / weeks. More of the country is classified 4 now.

Try reading the newspaper before you make such categorically ignorant statements. Trump has threatened Colombia. I have travelled to Colombia a dozen times for work and think it's a beautiful country both for tourists and business professionals, and I wouldn't take my kids there now with all the global uncertainty and the volatility of this administration for fear of not being able to get back.
