Teachers absent for days before winter break

Anonymous
Doesn’t MCPS have some kind of policy about teachers taking planned leave right before a break? Multiple of my kid’s teachers at Pyle were already gone on vacation yesterday or have announced they will be gone Monday and Tuesday.

I get having easy/review lessons or even playing movies, but to be already gone on vacation seems unprofessional.

Many teachers plan medical procedures for which they need time to recover right before a break.

These teachers told the kids where they are going on vacation.

I assume they don't have a policy based on how often we've seen this happened. We had a teacher last year who was never there the Friday before a long weekend.

Teachers get a certain amount of personal days to use each year. I don’t understand the issue if they want to use two or three of them right now. They are entitled to use them when they want.

Omg why do you care?! Every other profession allows people to take off work without parents complaining about a well deserved vacation. Most teachers work nights and weekends- so if they take a vacation on the slowest days of the year, who cares. Better now than during testing season or taking multiple days later on

+1 their time to use. I don’t see a problem.

Unprofessional? Do people come into your workplace and tell you it's unprofessional to take your available PTO days when you need/want to use them? Mind your own business.

I have no problem with it. It’s a throwaway week anyway.

Are you going to tell the kids that you have surgery planned? Come on. That will incite constant questions.

These same people complaining are likely the same parents who get angry when the school asks them not to take extended vacations during the school year. Presumably, these parents are using their PTO from their jobs for these vacations yet they don’t think it’s ok for teachers to ever take their PTO.

The hypocrisy is real. If anyone needs a break from students and parents these days, it’s teachers. I don’t blame any of them for using their allotted PTO during the school year and let’s remember they get way fewer days than most of us do. Even with the summer break they are fully entitled to their PTO.

A voice of reason. THANK YOU!

I have one coworker out for surgery so he can recover over break. He didn’t tell his students that’s what he’s doing. I have another who has an ailing parent, so she’s out taking care of him. I have a third who is out with the flu.

And even if a teacher is taking vacation, they have that right. They are adult professionals and should be treated like it. I don’t scream at my dentist for taking leave, nor do I go after my accountant if I can’t get hold of him during a slower time of year.

Astounding that we attack teachers the way we do.

Exactly. What a Scrooge attitude.

They are entitled to leave just like you are.
