| Is ND as good as it is sold? |
| Not anymore. |
It seems to be a cult, or is that an exaggeration? |
Although I understand your perspective, it is a bit too extreme. Notre Dame is a Catholic school with Catholic values practiced daily. Great for elementary school & for high school, but a little too much for one's college years. Great school for one who craves a Catholic environment 24/7, but too restrictive for those who wish to exercise adult freedom(s) during their college years. FWIW Definitely less restrictive than Mormon BYU. |
I think it really depends what your kids career goals are and what they want to major in. For instance, if they want to go to medical school and do Pre-Med, Business major, or perhaps a liberal arts degree, I think Notre Dame is a great choice. If your kid wants to study Engineering, Computer Science or another Tech field etc., I just think there are much better options, IMHO. |
| Last vestige of white privlege in American colleges. Depending on your background and viewpoint it is either a beacon or a cult |
You need to find god. |

I know enough people who are ND grads to know you can get a good education there. It's not turning out idiots.
But I can't for the life of me figure out why people want to spend college in South Bend, at a school with some very restrictive, sometimes misogynist views, with a fairly insular culture (so many Catholic high school grads, just a huge percentage of white, UMC, Catholic kids, many from the same schools). There is something culty about their alumni network. That can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. |

It’s in Indiana.
Drive across that state sometime and decide if you’d want to spend four years there. |

It’s a 9.5 hour drive in Indiana.
My kids went to Catholic HS- but zero interest in ND. |
| I am not Catholic and don't particularly want my kid to attend a Catholic school. That said, he visited with a friend who is applying and my son loved it. And every ND graduate I have ever encountered (including non-Catholics) has been terrific AND successful. |
| This is my niece's dream school- but she is also a senior at a Catholic school. Similar to ND, her high school is exactly as ND is described, so I think she will be very happy if she gets in. Like every school, it targets a certain group. ND is no different. There's nothing wrong if your child wants to go there if they want a nice Catholic education surrounded by others with similar beliefs. There are plenty of other religiious schools that are also "cultish" if that is what you want. |

DH and his two sibs are graduates as are quite a few friends - we are both cradle Catholics. Agree that it is much like your typical Catholic HS vibe. But for many majors it is a top notch education. DH is not a ND fanatic but would love for one of our DC to attend.

Great for my kid! Always enjoyed my time on campus where students seem happy, collaborative, and down to earth. We’re Catholic though and have a history with university. It wouldn’t be a good fit for everyone. |
That’s ok. Not everyone is cut out for it. The beauty is that you have so many other choices! |
