| Hello, I would like to sign my 17 year old for self-defense training and wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I am more interested in the situational awareness piece of it as opposesd to the physical training component, but welcome both. I want her to get a basic education on how to make good choices before going to college becase she recently made some poor decisions putting herself in a room with a guy she didn''t know and didn't let anyone know where she was. I thought I had this covered with her, but clearly don't. She is very susceptible to outside messaging and I don't want to "freak her out." or go down the "all men are out to get you" path. So I am looking for a balanced, logical approach with an emphasis on situational awareness. Thanks for recs you may have, we live in Old Town Fairfax. |

Wrestling, ju jitsu or krav maga
My daughter and I did this together and really found it empowering and helpful: https://jtrjujutsu.com/womens/ |
| I was gonna recommend JTR jujutsu and so happy to see it up here already. It’s been incredible for my child. |
| I too was going to recommend BJJ, but I’ll add that many police departments offer self defense classes. |
| Martial arts training is great. I’m in agreement with jujitsu and would add Muay Thai, western boxing, and arnis to that list. Schools that offer that training don’t necessarily include a situational awareness component so finding a reputable self-defense class that includes that would be helpful. |
| Krav Maga. |
I agree that martial arts doesn’t concentrate on situational awareness, but BJJ rolling will get you in shape and that can be half the battle in a self defense situation. Make yourself hard to kill. |
| What about Taekwondo? |
