We are finishing a basement and I’ve been given carte blanche to select paint colors, built-ins and finishing (oh boy). It’s small so it needs to serve multiple purposes:
- future hangout area for kids - cardio area (like treadmill or peloton) - storage for stuff hidden in built ins - watch tv on treadmill - maybe do hand weights - capable of transitioning to cool basement family room in future (like 15 years when we sell) Here’s my question: Is this a dated look? I want to install antique / aged mirrors on one wall similar to a lounge feel. This is for workouts and would serve as my gym mirror but also be decorative. The rest of the room will be a dark teal or green. High gloss.

| Oh please no. At least not gold or bronze antiquing. |
| Those are awful. |
| lol ok this is OP. What if I did a regular mirror wall? |
Do what you like it is only a mirror. |
| Do you need a whole wall? |
| A huge mirror is not great for any kid rough housing. |
| No wall of mirrors |
Except that's not anything resembling antique mirrors. I thought you meant something like this
|
| Its not necessarily dated, but its a very specific look that leans maximalist and formal. It can be hard to pull off. A basement feels like an odd place to try it. |
| It would be OK if behind a bar. But with bronze or burnished brass finishes. |
| If you want a mirror for exercise, I see why you'd do this but agree that aged mirror squares don't look nice. I would find a tall arched mirror instead. It will look better than a wall of just mirrors but also lean into that vintage vibe you seem to be after. HomeGoods always has many options, so does Wayfair. I would measure the space to see exactly how large you could get first. |
| Too bordello for a basement. |
| It looks like 1970s bordelo wall tile. It just needs red velvet wallpaper and shag carpet. |
But only if you are trying to make you bar look like an Austin Powers love nest setting. |
