Mcps jv track and field intensity

Anonymous
DS is a freshman and is doing jv basketball which practices/has meets every day. Is junior varisty track and field the same level of intensity with the practices and meets-looking ahead to spring

Track is the much more convenient sport. Practice is right after school, so everything is wrapped up by the late afternoon. But yes, track practices every day during the season. And the strong athletes, of course, train all year.

MCPS athletics are all pretty intense to be honest. 5-6 days of practice is the norm, which I was surprised by when my son initially got involved with sports.

You have to be ready for that level of commitment, which is not small.

It’s baby sitting to keep the kids out of trouble.

+1. Majority of the sports practice/have meets 5-6 days a week. I don’t think track has as many meets though.

I always found the spring season to be easier for my kids though.

One other thing - there is no JV track and field. It’s all varsity.

Oh interesting--since there's no JV--is track and field a sport where only some can join or is it a no-cut sport ?

Depends on the school. I believe Blair had to institute cuts for spring track a few years ago because there were simply too many kids for the number of staff to oversee them. I don't know if fall cross country had the same issue. Previously, cross country and winter track and spring track had all been no-cut.

Neither of my kids did cross country or track so I could be wrong, but I think those two sports are no-cut (depending on school though) but only the top kids participate in some of the meets? Or there are like A meets/heats and B meets/heats with A meets being for the top kids and B meets being for everyone else.

Agree with others that it is a single team but not everyone does all the meets. All kids will typically do the midweek meets against other schools (2-3 schools at a meet). The top kids have invitational meets on Saturdays and some evenings, plus county, regional and state meets. There were some invitationals outside the County, even out of state.
My DC was one of the competitive kids and it was a big time commitment and a long season - the State meet for spring track was typically Memorial Day weekend.

That is true for XC and outdoor track, but not indoor. There aren’t enough indoor facilities in the region for dual-team meets.

Good point, because my DC was doing all the indoor meets I forgot that. The main indoor facilities are Georgetown Prep and the PG SportsPlex. Plus the dreadful Baltimore Armory which isn't really a track yet got used for regionals. For some reason MCPS was never able to use facilities at UMD.

As others have said, it's probably somewhat school dependent. B-CC has for a long time been no cut for XC, but had try-outs and cuts for both winter and spring track. Typically 2 hours or so after school practices every weekday plus Saturday mornings when there aren't meets.
