First Day of School 2026-2027

Am I an idiot? Have they picked the calendar yet? The last survey I saw had two different starting dates (24th or 31st). I cannot find anywhere that definitely tells me when school starts, making it really challenging to play our usual end of the summer travel (I try to do it during pre service week because of childcare reasons). However the camp my kids go to is offering a big discount ending in about a week. Am I missing something?

They always vote on the calendar in mid-December. This year the vote is December 11. But Taylor said that C is the most likely Superintendent recommendation, and they usually take that one. It's the one starting on the 24th with winter break starting 12/23.

I looked at our after care website and it says school starts Aug 24th. So I guess that’s it. Very frustrating to be making camp decisions without better information.

Patience. They vote at Dec meeting next week. Plenty of time for you to sign up your little Larlo for summer camp in December or January.

I think the sarcasm isn’t warranted. Many families need camp for childcare. If you know where your kid is likely to go, then of course you’d want to take advantage of an early season sale.

Option C's actual first day is Tuesday, August 25th, since Monday the 24th will be the transition day.

Be ready on Dec 11 with your credit card, or check if you're paying with a check and stand outside the camp office ready to sign up on Dec 11. Six months ahead is plenty of time. There are people on this that have older kids and know how camps in the DC area work with their 6 months ahead sign up deals for anxious parents.

I think there is a high probability it will be 8/24. That’s what we are panning for, and we will make adjustments if they end up going with a week later.

Sorry I should have said 8/25. We will be at transition day so I have that as the date in y head.

OP here and this is the KAH website: https://kidsafterhours.com/yearly-calendar/

This discount saves me about $100 per week per kid. I would like to be able to utilize it if the schedule has in fact been set.

I am sure I’m not the only one that finds the pre-service week the toughest to figure out childcare and I do in fact plan all of childcare around knowing when that week is.

Oh god I’m an idiot that’s last year. God I should just give up on planning next summer.

Any camp that operates in a school will not have camp the week before school starts.

KAH is taking registrations for the week of August 17th but I assume they will cancel that week if the first day of school ends up being August 25th. They are typically closed the week before school starts and have a week of field trips the week before that. (Also they offer free cancellation/refunds anytime, so you can just register now and cancel things later once the calendar and everything else is figured out.)
