| Can someone with experience with this school, give some insights and thoughts on it? My kid got accepted into the business program, but we've never visited. We plan to early next year. My kid likes a big school with lots of school spirit and kids who are smart but social. A cute downtown with restaurants and bars. She wants to do greek life too. Thanks! |

They do an admitted students day in February. I’d recommend going. It was my daughter’s top choice but after visiting she chose another school and is really happy she did - she has friends at Univ if DE and doesn’t feel like she would have fit in. I didn’t disagree with her assessment.
My take from the visit was that they talked a lot about preparing for grad school and not jobs and they didn’t seem to have an internship pipeline. But it wasn’t a business major so that might be different. Another thing as a parent is that I wasn’t impressed with their safety culture. We had visited a lot of schools and I just was not impressed with Univ if DE. (I work in risk management so it’s something always on my mind). I know a lot of kids who have gone there. Most did sports of some sort. All really love/loved it. I don’t know anyone who transferred out. |
| The business school is very strong and I highly doubt pp above's experience will mirror it. I don’t have an affiliation but have familiarity with the business school externally |
| They noted in an information session that 95% of students have internships, I think because it is easy for businesses to incorporate in Delaware. It’s a safety school for my daughter but she is seriously considering attending. |
My student (who is not at UDel, but was accepted there) did not think the students at UDel had great school spirit. We visited twice and each time, my student noticed more kids wearing clothing for other schools and/or pro teams than Delaware itself. I didn't notice this at all, but "school spirit" wasn't on my radar of things to look for. I very much liked the school, the layout of campus, and downtown Newark. One thing I did notice that tons of kids seemed to be from Baltimore/DC, Philly, NJ, and NY. You should definitely visit in person. I was somewhat bummed when my kid said "No", but I wasn't going to argue with the decision. |
| My DS went to admitted student day. Totally all NJ/NY. Not his vibe at all. |
How would you describe NJ/NY kids and how are they different than kids in this area? |

I grew up nearby and quite a few of my friends are grads (I didn’t want to go to school that close to home). Many of them got MBAs and do quite well. I don’t know that not wearing DE gear means there is no spirit - my friends still show up for alumni events, including doing alumni band events.
The entire state of DE is smaller than Fairfax County, so yes, there are kids from other states. MD is just minutes from campus, and Jersey and PA line can be reached in 20-30 minutes. I always enjoyed visiting with my friends on and around campus. |
First PP here who mentioned lack of internships. Just for clarification, I was speaking about undergrad. I was more impressed with their offerings for grad school and felt like a main goal was preparing undergrads for grad school and not the job market. Again, did not attend the business major presentation. |
What sorts of things concerned you? |
| My freshman LOVES it there. He picked it over Penn State, Tech, and others. He isn't in a fraternity but some of his friends are. I am sure it isn't the highest in the country in school spirit but my kid is having a blast, goes to football games, tailgates, etc. And downtown Newark is super cute. Two thumbs up. |

UD grad.
There are a lot of kids from Media, Philly area, NJ, and Long Island. A lot attended top tier public schools in the Philly area. We also had some students from "elite" families in Wilmington. One of my roommates was from Towson. I don't think I ever met anyone from Virginia. There are some Marylanders there but a lot more students from Philly, NJ, and Long Island. Very few students attend from lower Delaware or even the Dover area. I transferred from Dickinson and liked UD a lot better than Dickinson. I enjoyed my time there and I was also a business major. |
The 95% statistic was for undergraduates |
Both these schools are on my son’s list. Why did you like Delaware so much more? Do you think your experience is still pretty accurate today? (Not sure how long ago you graduated) |
| Year 2025. The Chipotle right there where all the restaurants are was so crowded that they actually closed the place 3-4 hrs before they usually close. People who were already in line could order. Never seen a chipotle close anywhere. |
