Senior Bach Week

Anonymous
Mom of rising senior and curious about Bach week. Keep hearing about kids going to places like the Bach Festival at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall.

Do they typically have chaperones?

I was here for the typo. Well done, OP.

The place to be for Bach week is in Bethlehem PA. Can't believe they have hosted such a raucous event for well over a 100 years.

LOL, OP!

The Eugene, OR Bach Festival is a regular bacchanal. And bonus: you can get 15% off your weed purchase at a local dispensary if you wear Ducks gear!

Before your kids go, talk to them about consent. Teach them to be comfortable saying, “Don’t touch my organ.”

OMG thank you for this!

Well there's always the Washington Bach Consort. See for yourself whether you would let your teens go without you.

(Anyway, appreciate the thread. I have happy memories of taking my teens to a performance of the B minor mass).

Just be sure to read the fine print when helping your child book their reservations for Bach week. I wasn't careful and DD ended up with tickets to the CPE Bach Festival instead and had to stay at a Motel One in Hamburg that she says was full of creepy clavichord players. She still hasn't forgiven me.

Also be careful about Bach concerts in Germany in the winter. There’s Gluhwein flowing around.

In full disclosure, I stole that last joke from TwoSet Violin’s genius and hilarious video:

Before your DC gets too interested in Bach weeks, please consider the following:

- JSB is reported to have pulled a dagger on a bassoonist during a scuffle

- JSB was put in jail by the Duke of Weimar for "having too stubbornly forced the issue of his dismissal"

- JSB was reproached by the town council about having a "strange maiden make music with him in the organ loft"

- JSB wrote a cantata about a girl's addiction to a caffienated beverage

Then again, I played JSB's music a teenager and turned out relatively ok

While I know this is a joke, I have a teen who would honest-to-god would rather go to Bach week than Beach week, so I am kind of bummed this is not a thing.

But there are music camps that take place in late June. DD used to do the one at George Mason. There was also one called Blue Ridge.
