I see plenty of sun spots, ok, but I was not prepared for the laundry list of stuff the dermatologist listed on my chart. I didn't even know what all this stuff was or that I had it. Apparently covered throughout, and she took a biopsy on my arm and face as well. Yes, I am fair skinned, but here's the question- would this be normal for most of us as we age? And does anyone try to fix it with treatments? Apparently I would be there for days on end to do that if I wanted to, and was not planning on it.
Worst part, there's a picture of me laying there under the harsh light and I literally look like an 80 year old, and up to now, I thought I looked pretty good. I see that I was delusional. Oh well... |

What is “all this stuff”?
For aging skin, you want to use: Lasers Retin A Botox Plated Sculptra (unless you’re getting a facelift w/in 2 years) |
Sun damage spots Sebhorric keratosis- which I still don't see really on me, but she does. Benign growths-keratosis Stuff like that. No botox isn't going to deal with that. If I used a laser, it would be all over. Aren't most people dealing with this? Retin A? What is that going to do now? |

The sk can just be frozen off. You do have to keep up with them over time, because they keep re-forming in different places. The first time I did it I had 50-60 of them done (most on my back) and then it’s been 10 or so every year or two.
Probably the same for sun damage and laser but I haven’t needed it so far. |
You probably do not need Plated (a $285 bottle of lotion) if you do some of this other stuff. The “active” ingredient is “exosomes,” which you can look up here to see the literature on: https://paulaschoice.sg/pages/beautypedia-ingredient-checker |
Yes, I'm also fair skinned and blonde. I'm 50. I have tons of sun spots on my legs mostly, but also arms and décolletage. She suggested fraxel. |

Hi there - I grew up in Florida and sailed competitively with no sunscreen for my whole childhood so I feel your pain.
I have had four skin cancers removed from my face (3 basal and 1 squamous). If you need MOHS, go see Dr. Yu in Bethesda. He is super nice and very talented. I have no scars. I don't want to do lasers or other expensive stuff, just to age gracefully. So I use the Dr.Rogers night and day and cream which is more gentle than Retina but works to turn skin over. I also use PAVISE sunscreen which I love - I have seen a difference in pore size, spots lightening and skin glowing since I started this - expensive but highly recommend. I have had the liquid nitrogen to burn of AKs and age spots on my chest and hands and it works well. I think I actually look pretty good for my age and sun damage but I take really good care of my skin. Personally, I think we will look back at the Botox/Filler era and realize it wasn't great for long term aging and health. I did a laser 10 years ago, age spots fell off, but then the next summer they came right back. So I'm not doing that again. |
Oh, that's interesting that they came back. These sun damage spots are all over. I wouldn't even know where to start. I am big on sunscreen, but as a child I had no sunscreen at all. I think I'm just going to have to accept this as what happens. Hope my biopsies aren't cancerous. |
Are you going to do Fraxel? What does Fraxel do ans is there down time? |
| You will love laser. Try BBL to start. It’s the ideal time of year to do it. It is soooo good for the spots. Try that and see if there is anything that bothers you after that. But don’t invent problems |
Yes, they do come back (actually they are new ones) - you’re supposed to do the laser once a year. |
How much does this cost generally? For me, maybe 1,000,000- lol. |
I don't know what that means- invent problems. I just walked into the dermatologist office as a regular person and came out thinking I was a lizard. Maybe the dermatologist is inventing problems. |
It's a rabbit hole, OP. Focus on being proactive with pre-cancerous spots, find a daily routine that works for you and move on. There's no need for all the expensive maintenance stuff that a lot of people do unless you are hating what you are seeing in the mirror. Maybe get a derm who is more health focused and less beauty treatment focused. My kids call me a speckled egg... we laugh about my spots. It's not that big a deal, honestly. I wear a little bit of make up and focus on more important things. |
Maybe there's some confusion here. I didn't get this way by doing cosmetic things. I got this way by doing absolutely zero cosmetic things. I am pretty low maintenance. My derm is always freezing stuff off me, but, despite being in an office teeming with cosmetic stuff, and it's clear that she partakes in fillers, etc , she has literally never suggested or pushed even one procedure. I think she probably thinks I'm a lost cause. So, that's why I was wondering, was I supposed to do some cosmetic things all this time? Should I now? If so what? I dont even know where to start. Of note, my younger collegues in their 30s and 40s are all botoxing frequently. That kind of makes me sad- for them really. |
