The good, the bad, the ugly about Susquehanna University in PA, please

People on here will turn their noses up. But we had a family member attend and they had a wonderful experience and are currently attending a top grad school.

I don’t have a kid there, but my in-laws live in the area so I have some familiarity with it. It’s a small, solid school for B students. I think the merit aid is pretty good for students who exceed those marks. It’s an Evangelical Lutheran school, if that matters. Pretty little campus and Selinsgrove is a cute enough small town. The US 11/15 strip isn’t far from campus, and it has a Target, Kohl’s, Walmart, supermarkets, fast food, and a mall that’s barely clinging to life. There’s not going to be much to do there for a kid used to city life. Bucknell is a few miles up the river. Campus is pretty liberal, the surrounding area is decidedly not.

DS went there and loved it. He wanted something totally different from here and felt like he knew all of his professors and they knew him. He spent a semester abroad and made really good friends during his four years there.

Selinsgrove is definitely a small town but the campus is nice and the kids seem happy to be there. We enjoyed our visits while he was there. Most of his friends live and work in the NYC or Philly area and none of them had any trouble getting hired after graduation.

Well, it’s 80k a year and ranked 100. You can probably doo better financially elsewhere. And in-state? If you want small, look at William & Mary or other Va (or your in-state) smaller school options

My husband went there, was a finance major and absolutely loved it. He went on to get his MBA and CFA and does extremely well salary wise. They are known for giving good merit, and from what I’ve heard recently, most people pay around $35k per year. He wanted our daughter to attend but she chose Penn State bc she was looking for a larger school environment.

Its a pretty decent college.

A kid looking at that school (SU) is not getting in to W&M.

Huh? Its a private school with 2200. Assuming its more appropriate to compare to McDaniel, Goucher, Shenandoah, Randolph Macon etc. Sorry OP, don't know anything about the school.

It’s also generous with merit aid and most kids are not full pay. Lots of kids from VA who chose it, wanted to go out of state. It’s nothing like W&M or UMW.

A good option for a B+ student and decent rigor with a 1350 SAT? Would it be a target or a likely for a student like this?

It would be a likely.

We visited and liked it. It had that quintessential LAC feeling. The town is small, but had a few cute cafes. The kids were super nice. The tenor of the conversations felt a little more academic than at some of the schools we looked at for my B+ kid.

I remember they had a few quirky majors. DS picked another school, but he got a nice package of aid from Susquehanna.

If your kid went there and had a car, they could visit friends at Bucknell, Penn State, etc.
