No. of AP classes for weighted GPA

Anonymous
How many AP classes do our kids need to get a weighted GPA of 4.7 or above? Someone said on this forum that our kids need 4.7 or above for UMD collage park. My kid took all honors classes but no AP in ninth grade.

AP and honor classes weight the same, both maximize at 5. For HS, other than PE, you can technically take all honor and AP classes and reach > 4.98 GPA. However, each university/college use its own algorithm to calculate WGPA, which sometimes weights AP classes more than honor classes.

You can also take honors health, honors tech, honors math classes, etc for weighted GPA. If your school offers IB classes, those are also weighted as well as the audition-based chorus and orchestra classes. It doesnt have to be APs.

That’s the ridiculous thing about MCPs. You can take honors English which is the default that everyone takes or AP English and both are weighted the same. Even stupid easy health class is “Honors health.”
