NCAA Women's Transfer Portal Opened Up Today

And there are already HUNDREDS announcing on twitter. I actually thought this would be a slower year in the portal.

most won't get picked up.

I realize I'm just an old person screaming at the sky, but the transfer portal is a blight on college sports. Most of these athletes won't play professionally, in any sport, and would be better off focusing on a sustainable career after they graduate.

Is it down to one window yet?

There were about 1000 players in the portal last year in Womens Soccer. Expect it will be higher this year. Some interesting data from ncaa here: https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2022/4/25/transfer-portal-data-division-i-student-athlete-transfer-trends.aspx

65% of D1 players who entered the portal actually transferred to another team
61% of D1 transfers continued to get athletic money
21% of D2 transfers moved to D1

There will be hundreds of players who are unsuccessful in transferring and their college soccer career is essentially over. I hope they picked a school they are happy at without soccer.

Hundreds of players will transfer but without scholarships. Lesson: Just because you get a scholarship does not mean it will last 4 years.

Not many are able to go from D2 to D1. Don't choose a D2 school thinking it's a stepping stone to D1. People mostly move down the ladder not up.

Memphis already has 6 girls in the portal and they are playing in the NCAA tournament.

this is actually frightening and a bit disheartening. Seems the safe bets are d3 below and the like.

Most kids (women) will definitely find a new home! They are very successful in the portal.

You do realize that players leave schools by choice, right?

Not necessarily - some of these players are encouraged to transfer.

I think the portals should be sport-dependent, meaning it doesn't open until the conclusion of the championships/playoffs for those sports. And/or athletes should forfeit any wages/earning for however long they are in the portal when it overlaps with their current sport season.

So are the players in portal ones that are bench players at their school and hoping to be picked up to be starters? Do coaches know if a player goes to portal- assume they have to, but what happens if player goes to portal and doesn’t transfer somewhere- can coach at existing school drop them? Or are ones on portals the ones going to be dropped anyway?
